Activities

Volunteering
Travel is always richer when you get the opportunity to find out about the daily lives of people who live in the area you're visiting. If you?re in the mood for an authentic Shangaan experience, we organise community tours to the local villages.

The Community Tours and Excursions are organised by Pride 'n Purpose, Ulusaba's charitable arm. The basic philosophy behind its work is the principle of empowering people to help themselves while promoting sustainable development. All of Pride'n Purposes's expenses are funded by Ulusaba and Virgin Unite, the group's entrepreneurial foundation, so 100% of donations can be put into the much needed projects to improve living conditions for the local population. All money raised through those tours goes to the local communities.

  • Pride 'n Purpose
You can now incorporate a volunteering experience into your stay. Our team will create bespoke itineraries to participate in hands-on projects within the local communities, based around your own skills and interests. Not only will this create an opportunity to experience the local culture it'll provide a way in which you can perhaps give a little something back to others.

  • Day in the Life
The Day in a Life village tour looks into some of the charitable projects and schemes Ulusaba is actively involved with. We tailor this tour's itinerary according to your interests.

  • It's Child's Play
'The It's Child's Play' tour has more hands on activities. You will have the opportunity to share your skills and teach children anything from new songs to the school numbers and alphabet.

Additional Notes

Families
At Ulusaba kids of any age can stay at Rock and Cliff Lodge and are invited to join the Cub's Club. We offer a range of activities tailored to each child or group together with Cub's cuisine.

All Cubs will be given a Cub's Club Backpack full of little goodies to entertain and educate them about the African Bush. Rock Lodge is ideal for families with children as this is where our Ulusaba Cub's Club is based.

Because Rock Lodge is intimate, we do not operate a set programme, rather a range of great activities for your cubs to choose from. On arrival each cub will receive a cool backpack filled with educational safari goodies and a cap! Cubs have their very own amenities in the room, just like their folks do, and we will provide a fantastic range of kids' products. In every Cub's room there will be a personal welcome letter and a special introduction to their stay with a health & safety briefing specifically aimed at younger guests.

Dining
All your meals are included and with at least six chances to eat, we promise you won't go hungry.

Freshly baked goodies wait before you set off on your game drive, we might surprise you with a few more treats while you're in the middle of the bush.

Once back at the lodges a full breakfast and debrief - our pick is the poached eggs on a boerewors patty, simply delicious and hard to resist?

Lunch time is taken any time you please from 1.30pm until 3.00pm and our chefs will whip you up anything you fancy and we have a menu if the choice is too hard. Our Rangers favourite is the Kudu burger.

What's on the menu?

Our internationally renowned chefs have developed numerous pan-African dishes influenced by many African cultures, flavours and spices. Our recipes are constantly refreshed and consist of seasonal, local ingredients. Whether dining under the African sky, in the Boma, on a deck or in the dining room, our menus and meals promise to be exciting, social and inspirational. All our breads and pastries are home baked daily and we also cater for private meals and special occasions.

Private Dining

Of course, if you'd like a more intimate experience, we'd be delighted to organise private dining for you either on a secluded deck or at a location you choose. Be sure to win some brownie points by organising this before arrival and we'll make sure we ramp up the romance.

Cubs club meals

We have a great range of child-friendly meals. Your Cubs (that's the children) can choose from a selection of tasty, well balanced, healthy and fun meals keeping both the parents and the Cubs happy!

Room Service

Feeling peckish? Just buzz our team from your room and we'll keep you feeling full with something tasty off our menu.

Wine Cellar
Wine lovers won't go thirsty with our well-stocked wine cellar at Safari Lodge. Our tailored wine tastings are a must with an experience at the Safari Lodge wine cellar starts with us establishing your own personal tastes. If you prefer hearty reds we won't delay your enjoyment by showcasing our best rosés, and likewise if you can't wait to sip a refreshing glass of chilled white we won't hold you back. South Africa has an excellent reputation for wine worldwide and naturally we're keen to showcase some of the best local vintages on offer. The wines speak for themselves, and we want you to feel at home, so we don't have a lengthy wine list full of 'winespeak'.

About our selection: You'll find wines from tiny family owned cellars that put so much passion into their craft because they want people to love their wine as much as they do. The traditional bigger names are also present along with some newer, equally impressive small producers, with wines from organic and biodynamic producers. There's something to suit everybody: a dry rosé for lunchtime, a beefy cabernet sauvignon with your game dish as well as South Africa's very own pinotage and local specialty chenin blanc. You'll also find exquisitely oaked and unoaked chardonnays and delicate pinot noirs for lighter dishes.

Spa
The Aroma Boma is the perfect antidote to all the excitement of being out on the game drives. Book in for a relaxing treatment, from facial rituals to massage to essential grooming.

The Aroma Boma at Rock Lodge is located 800 feet above the African savannah with truly stunning views over the Bush and offers complete privacy.

At Safari Lodge, the Aroma Boma is built on the banks of the dry Mabrak riverbed amongst the trees and away from the main lodge area, so the only likely disturbance is perhaps the odd elephant wandering past!

We use a range of products from 'Africology'. 'Africology' prides itself on its African roots, taking inspiration from home and using local active ingredients including rooibos, aloe, marula and African potato. Spa treatments are available for an additional charge.

La Stone Full Body
Ulusaba Rock Lodge is uniquely placed on top of a koppie, or small mountain, made up of granite and quartz rock. This LaStone treatment is designed around the principle of geothermal therapy and uses warm basalt stones to relax, nurture and nourish tight and stressed muscles, allowing deep heat penetration. As a complement, cool marble stones are used to flush out toxins and melt any remaining muscular tension. This is a highly effective treatment.

Africology Body Experience
Your body experience starts with a full body scrub and mud application. Your therapist will choose one of the muds from our range specific to your needs. This process eliminates toxins while exfoliating lifeless skin cells. This treatment softens, soothes, and improves skin hydration; the warm herbal blend massage relaxes you on application, while the background sounds of Africa ensure a special way to help the mind focus on the holistic experience.

Bespoke Body Yoga Massage
This treatment is wonderful for runners and active individuals. This massage covers the whole body and targets stress and stiff areas. The stretching movements increase flexibility and releases tension allowing the body's natural energy to flow more freely ? ideal after a long flight.

La Sole Reflexology
Using hot and cool stones on the reflex points on the feet, this treatment will work on all the systems of the body, leaving you totally relaxed.

Weddings & Honeymoons
We love weddings at Ulusaba, and what could be more spectacular or evocative than a ceremony in the African Bush! Getting married on safari at Ulusaba in South Africa is the kind of wedding your guests will be talking about for years to come. Say 'I do' under the romantic canopy of an Amarula tree, surrounded by flaming bamboo torches, and announced by the beat of African drums. We've put together four wedding options, from the simple to the lavish, all designed with you in mind.

Special Occasions

Whether a milestone birthday, anniversary, company retreat or just a time to get away with friends and family, Ulusaba is the perfect setting. With exclusive use of one or both of the Ulusaba lodges you have all the privacy, exclusivity and flexibility that you desire. Your stay will be uniquely tailored: perhaps cocktails at sunset followed by tribal dances around a bush campfire or a safari themed child's birthday party? Whatever your preference, our team will ensure an unforgettable African safari experience.
