Overview
Bendega Nui was designed in partnership with internationally renowned architect Glenn Parker to respect the style, proportion and symmetry of traditional Balinese architecture within a modern tropical design. The villa's name reflects the owners' love for Bali (Bendega means 'fisherman' in Balinese), and their native New Zealand (Nui means ?grand' in Maori).
Set in almost an acre of serene tropical gardens overlooking the rice fields, the villa is a short walk from the beach and a short drive to the chic restaurants and bars of Seminyak; close to the excitement of Bali but far enough away to ensure a traditional Balinese experience.
There are four large bedrooms at Bendega Nui, each with ensuite bathroom and a balcony positioned to capture the stunning views. A very private master suite with its own plunge pool, sun deck and garden balé can be added as an optional fifth room. A reading balé, gym and massage room with outdoor bath, a library with 50-inch plasma TV, a games room complete with pool table, and a sun deck hidden below the pool provide ample opportunities for relaxation. There's also a stunning open sitting area that overlooks the rice fields, a separate air-conditioned dining room with a table that seats up to 20, a pool pavilion for outdoor dining and a large infinity-edge pool, both situated to catch the fabulous Bali sunsets.
The villa's contemporary design is enhanced, outside and in, with the highest quality materials, all chosen for their natural beauty and durability. Thoughtfully chosen Balinese and Javanese sculptures, cabinets and artefacts ? many of them antique ? as well as bright floral fabrics and custom-printed traditional ikat textiles bring the stylish dark-wood furniture to vivid life. State-of-the-art facilities include a Sonos digital music system that can be programmed to match musical moods in several different ?zones', a modern kitchen, satellite television and DVD players and air conditioning in all the indoor areas.
The extensive gardens surrounding Bendega Nui are very special, and make an idyllic setting for a wedding or other special celebration. Lawns are dotted with frangipani, oil palms, jasmine, yuccas, African tulip trees and an abundance of tropical fruit, and feature several serene, koi-filled ponds.
Finally, a dedicated, discreet team of staff, including an excellent chef, is on hand to look after visitors with wide smiles and willing service, leaving you free to indulge in the special charm and beauty of Bali.
Accommodation
Bendega Nui has been carefully designed to maximize its 3,900 square metres of land amidst the rice terraces of Canggu. The villa is entered via gates that slide open to reveal a two-metre-high black-stone Buddha head serenely welcoming visitors to the property. The entry courtyard provides ample room for parking and is dotted with frangipani, oil palms, jasmine, yuccas and African tulip trees. Guests walk over sandstone steps across a large koi-filled pond to the main entrance doors.
The villa's buildings form an 'H' shape, with the main living and sleeping accommodation spread across the two-storey horizontal bar of the 'H', and one of the three master bedrooms, the pool pavilion, the gym and spa room, and the staff quarters forming the four 'prongs'. This pleasing symmetry is carried through to many elements within the villa, including the 11 x 11-metre swimming pool that lies between the pool pavilion and the master bedroom pavilion.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Every bedroom at Bendega Nui has lovely open views across the greener-than-green rice fields of Canggu. The villa can accommodate eight people in three king-bedded rooms and a twin room (which can convert into a king-bedded room). There is capacity to add three more foldaway beds for children if required, and a stand-alone master suite creates an optional fifth bedroom. All bedrooms are air conditioned, generously sized, tastefully furnished, and have ensuite bathrooms and balconies.
Purple room (master pavilion)
Accessed by steppingstones across a garden pond, the first master bedroom is housed in its own pavilion at the front of the gardens and overlooking the rice fields. This room is private, peaceful and perfectly placed. A canopied, four-poster, king-size bed facing a private terrace is the focus of the room. Behind the bed is a large, walk-through dressing area. At one end of the vast ensuite bathroom is a sunken double bathtub, while, at the far end, is a spacious shower area. A door at the side of the bedroom leads out to the pool and gardens.
Orange room (upstairs master)
In this upper-floor bedroom, a centrally placed four-poster king-size bed looks out onto a private terrace with daybed that, in turn, overlooks the gardens, pool and rice fields. Behind the bed, a dressing area leads through to the large ensuite bathroom where a super-size bathtub looks over the gardens at rear of the villa. Adjoining the bedroom is a study equipped with a laptop computer and printer for guest use.
Green room (upstairs master)
The Green room, also furnished with a king-size four-poster bed, looks out over a "wall" of sliding glass doors that open onto a balcony furnished with a colourful daybed shared with the twin room next door. The large bathroom is fitted with a shower area and bathtub with views of the ocean.
Turquoise room (upstairs twin)
Bendega Nui has been designed with families in mind and this twin-bedded room, with its cheerful turquoise accessories is ideal for children (the beds can be easily converted to a king size if preferred). This bedroom also features a 37-inch flat screen TV. The ensuite bathroom has a spacious walk-in shower and double wash basins.
One bedroom pavilion (with private plunge pool)
Set in a private courtyard, this master suite is accessed through a traditional Balinese gate from the main villa. It comes complete with its own 6 x 3-metre plunge pool, sun deck and pool balé. The outdoor bathroom has a decadent stone soaking tub for two and shower. Inside, the four-poster king-size bed sits beneath a traditional thatched roof. The room is equipped with an iPod dock, television, DVD player and minibar.
Living & Dining Areas
Living room
Two sets of tall sliding doors open to reveal a spectacular open-air, double-height sitting room facing the gardens, pool and rice fields. This fan-cooled space, which seats 12, is simply but stylishly furnished with two oversized black teak sofas and armchairs set around matching coffee tables. The black upholstery is brought to life with vibrant contrasting green and orange patterned scatter cushions.
Along the back wall of the sitting room, an ancient canoe has been topped with glass and transformed into a 6m-long table; a stunning centrepiece for a buffet dinner. Above the canoe, a set of antique carved panels are framed against a wall of golden sandstone. A galleried walkway runs above the sitting area providing another opportunity to enjoy the views.
Dining and kitchen
To the right of the sitting room, glass doors lead into the wooden-floored, dining room, showcasing a massive, five-metre-long solid Merbau dining table that seats up to 20 people. More glass doors open onto the garden at the front, while a large mirror is set in an antique door frame at the far end of the room. A charming glass-fronted cabinet houses glassware and crockery next to a door leading through to the kitchen.
The kitchen at Bendega Nui reflects the owners? love of cooking. This fully fitted, air-conditioned room has such appeal that it?s almost tempting to give the chef a day off! Dark wood cabinets, cream-colored Corian work tops and glass splash-backs create clean lines, while a large central island ensures plenty of work space.
The chef's biggest delight is the range of equipment available to him here ? including an extra large oven, a Jura Impressa coffee machine, waffle-maker, Cuisinart panini toaster, ice cream maker and dishwasher, to name but a few. The kitchen is also equipped with two large fridges, and a freezer and wine fridge in the pantry. Just outside is a custom-built pizza oven.
Library and games room
In the comfortable library and adjoining games room, a set of floor-to-ceiling shelves contains numerous books on Bali and Indonesia as well as more popular holiday reading. The library has a 50-inch flat-screen television with DVD player and more than 50 international satellite channels. An L-shaped sofa and two floral print chairs offer plenty of comfort in front of the TV.
The games room is almost completely surrounded by glass and can be opened up to the gardens on three sides. Bar stools and easy chairs provide seating for spectators around the full-sized pool table and there's a wide selection of other games available too. Opposite the games room is a delightful guest washroom. Finished in warm Indian Sandstone, and furnished with an antique cabinet, this washroom opens into a pretty walled garden.
Outdoor living
The 11 x 11-metre stone-tiled infinity-edged swimming pool overlooks the rice fields. As well as being large enough for some serious swimming, the pool is perfectly positioned for sunset cocktails, which can be enjoyed from the wide stone shelves set into the pool at just the right depth.
Next to the pool a breezy open-sided pavilion is furnished with a huge built-in daybed and a table for up to 10 people. This is a great place to congregate at the start of the day for a ?come-as-you-please' breakfast. A handy kitchenette with a water cooler, bar fridge and sink is concealed neatly behind louvered doors and around the corner is a guest changing room with toilet and shower.
To the far side of the lawn, perched over a koi pond, is a peaceful relaxation balé. furnished with a comfortable daybed, floor cushions and two petrified-wood stools.

Activities
Bendega Villas' manager has a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villas.
- The Legendary Beach House at Echo Beach is a ten-minute drive, or a pleasant walk along the beach from the villas. This is a great place in the evenings for watching the beautiful sunsets. The restaurant has a large eating area that spills out onto a beachside bluff offering a casual international menu, and at weekends has a daily seafood barbecue. Also at Echo Beach is Sticky Fingers, ? a great place for coffee, smoothies and fresh juices.
- Other local places to eat include the grandly named Deus Ex Machina ? Temple of Enthusiasm, which serves a wide range of Asian food with cold beer in a combination art gallery clothing store cum motorcycle repair shop within a five minute walk from the villa. There are also several smaller restaurants serving Asian cuisine within walking distance, including one at the Ametis villas that serves only organic produce, Betelnut, Kakilima and Crate café.
- Also within walking distance along the beach is The Tugu Hotel, a living museum of priceless antiques and rare cultural artefacts. The Tugu also offers casual and fine dining restaurants and a delightful spa. Across the road and practically beachfront is a great cafe, Old Man's, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, daily happy hour, often live music and a monthly Saturday market
- Trendy Seminyak is just 20 minutes' drive away has a wide choice of international restaurants. Our favourites for world class dining include the legendary Ku De Ta, The Living Room, La Lucciola, Petitenget Café, Sarong, Sardine, Metis, Potato head, La Favela, La Plancha, Mosaic, Merah Putih, Bambu, Urchin, Barbacoa, Mexicola and MAMA San. More casual restaurants include the Bali Deli, La Sal, Cafe Moka, Made's Warung I & II, Biku, Casa Loca, La Barca, and last but not least Grocer and Grind, the best coffee in Bali. There are also a number of chic cocktail bars (try the Hu'u Bar late at night) and exciting night clubs such as Townhouse. Seminyak also has many lavish spas and elegant boutiques.
- About 15 minutes' drive from Bendega Villas is the Nirwana Bali Golf Club. The course was designed by Greg Norman and has been voted one of the best golf courses in Asia. Close by Nirwana is one of the most famous temples in Bali, Tanah Lot.
- Other sports available nearby include Kuda P riding stables, Aquamarine scuba diving, off-road quad biking, surfing schools and fishing.
- For a day out with the kids there's Bali Treetop Adventure Park, Elephant Safari Park, Bali Zoo, rafting and Waterbom Bali with its 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. Go early to beat the crowds!
- Drive westwards to explore the charming Tabanan regency, revealing terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities. At 850m above sea level, the view from the Jatiluwih rice terraces, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, is one of the finest imaginable. Alternatively, head north to explore the volcanic lakes near the mountain town of Bedugul, including Lake Bratan with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu ? one of Bali's most important temples.
- Bold and brave bargain hunters should head for one of Denpasar's markets within the heart of Bali's bustling provincial capital, for an exciting and rewarding shopping experience.
- Borrow one of the villa's bicycles and explore the scenic rice-field landscape and rural villages _ a great way to get under the skin of the 'real' Bali. Stop off at a local warung (café) to sample some basic Balinese fare or cool off with a cold drink.

Additional Notes
Families
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus - and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.Bendega Villas is well set up for families, offering flexible bedroom configurations, plenty of garden space, and well-stocked games and TV rooms. We would, however, advise caution for families with toddlers due to the numerous water features throughout the two properties.
The team of friendly staff at Bendega Villas will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).
Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Bendega Burgers for brunch? Home-made pizza and ice cream for tea? No problem. The villa has a special kids menu with all the usual favourites and more.
Don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids' equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we don't have in-house (villa facilities include baby cots, highchairs, movies, books, games and pool toys) we can hire on your behalf
Dining
One of the great benefits of renting a villa is the option to relax and enjoy delicious food - Asian and Western - prepared where and when you desire. Bendega Villas has a full-time chef and a cook who will delight villa guests with beautifully presented dishes - from roasted vegetable salads, to Balinese chicken curry, to nasi goreng (fried rice), to steak and chips. The deserts are not to be missed either - or the chef's homemade jams and chutneys. They are happy to try out new dishes and even to share the kitchen ? especially when guests are willing to share their favourite recipes! Bendega Villas also has its own pizza oven, which produces some wonderful gourmet pizzas to order.Daily breakfast is included in the villa rate and a suggestion menu is in place where meals can be designed in consultation with the chef and villa manager. Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price plus a 20% handling fee which is subject to service charge and government tax. Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance, and the staff will do the shopping and keep the receipts for reference.
Please remember while the villa's facilities and staff capabilities are of the highest quality, the villa's kitchen cannot maintain the same inventory as a restaurant serving hundreds of patrons in a day. Therefore please discuss meals in advance (ideally 24 hours) to allow the chef and his team time to purchase and prepare for you.
Gym & Spa
To the right of Bendega Nui's entry courtyard, a stepping-stone pathway leads across the lawn to the gym and massage room, housed in its own private pavilion. A woodwork screen divides this room, with a massage bed on one side and an exercise bike and treadmill on the other. While they exercise, gym users have the option to watch TV or listen to music, which can be programmed specifically for this room.Although surrounded by glass on three sides, the gym and massage room is fitted with blinds that can be pulled down for privacy and the room can be fan-cooled or air-conditioned.
Tucked away behind the gym is an outdoor bathroom with toilet, rain shower and, the pièce de résistance, a huge bathtub carved from a single piece of black granite, reached by stepping stones over a tranquil pond. The walled garden surrounding the tub is planted with frangipani and palms and a Flame of the Forest tree ? a sublime place to relieve those aching muscles after a good workout.
NOTE: As the gym is located within the gardens of Bendega Nui, it is only available to guests at Bendega Rato when Bendega Nui is unoccupied or the villas are rented together.
We can recommend a range of deluxe treatments carried out by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply). Here's a sample of what's on the menu:
Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.
Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.
Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.
Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
Wedding
Bendega Villas has hosted numerous weddings and is one of the most sought-after private event venues in Bali.Weddings for up to 100 guests (or 60 seated guests) can be arranged at Bendega Nui, it?s poolside lawns making a beautiful setting overlooking the rice fields, and when Nui is rented together with Bendega Rato and the one bedroom pavilion, a total of 16 adult guests and six children can be accommodated.
Parties of up to 25 guests can be catered for by the villa staff team, and for larger numbers we can recommend expert event organizers, florists, decorators and caterers so you can focus on relaxing and celebrating with your guests.
