Overview

Chalina Estate is a magnificent property overlooking the picturesque rice fields of Canggu and situated just minutes from the famed surf breaks at Echo Beach on Bali's south-west coast. Resting upon 5,300 square metres of beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns bordering the Pangi river, with a divine 30-metre swimming pool as its centrepiece, the villa invites guests to enter a world of total peace and privacy.

This luxurious home delightfully pairs the old with the new - classic Balinese architecture with alang-alang thatched roofs, sandstone walls, polished stone and dark wood floors provide the perfect backdrop to showcase the owner's striking modern artwork. Funky sculptures mingle with handpicked Indonesian artefacts to create an interesting dimension of shapes and textures that represent the blending of different cultures.

Featuring six bedrooms and a converted study (which can serve as an additional bedroom), generous living and dining areas and a separate lounge bar with two adjoining terraces, there's plenty of space to relax and unwind. The pool's floating gazebo provides a soothing location for a massage or to practice meditation and embrace the villa's uplifting energy.

With butler service and a private chef on hand to prepare delicious Asian and Western dishes you need not lift a finger; just lie back and indulge in the luxurious surroundings and magical sunsets.

Chalina Estate's perfectly manicured lawns, exotic tropical flora and stunning outlook make the villa an idyllic setting for weddings, parties and special events. From a traditional wedding ceremony to a unique and memorable birthday celebration, all dreams can be capably realised.

Suitable for all interests and ages - from extended families to groups of friends - Chalina Estate is also the ultimate destination to rejuvenate mind, body and soul. Embark on a spiritual retreat in this peaceful haven surrounded by natural beauty and the stresses and strains of modern life will soon evaporate into the tropical air.

Accommodation

The entrance to Chalina Estate immediately sets the mood with beautiful fish ponds featuring purple water lilies, a cascading waterfall and large stone vase fountains creating a peaceful tropical ambiance.

The villa's 30-metre swimming pool is the focal point of the design with all rooms strategically positioned around it to optimise the views of the stunning landscaped grounds. Two generous master suites face the pool from the upper storey of the main bedroom pavilion just above a guest room and converted study/children's bedroom, while three further guest suites occupy their own pavilions, privately spaced apart among the gardens and overlooking the rice fields.

The villa's tastefully decorated, tropical Bali-Style living spaces step down in a series of thatch-roofed pavilions towards the rice fields and the river.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Chalina Estate's main two-storey residence houses three bedrooms and the study, which can be converted to an extra bedroom, while three further bedrooms are situated in individual pavilions leading down towards the river. Each of Chalina Estate's ensuite bedroom is air-conditioned and features black-out curtains, a flat-screen TV and DVD player and a small fridge.

Saffron room

This huge suite has incredible views over the garden and rice fields. A king-size four-poster bed with golden mosquito net and bright fuchsia and green cushions sits proudly in the middle of this high-ceilinged room between side tables supporting feathered lamp shades, while behind the bed, two white sofas contrast nicely against the dark-wood floors and artwork. Glass sliding doors open onto a covered timber deck complete with a comfy sofa and ottomans.

The ensuite bathroom offers a large stainless steel bath, wooden vanity with twin basins and a walk-in terrazzo rain shower. Guests in this room enjoy exclusive access to satellite TV.

Amber room

Opposite Saffron on the first floor landing, the second master suite, Amber, also presents stunning views across the pool and garden. The netted, four-poster king-size bed sports bright turquoise cushions and white feather lampshades ornament the bedside tables. Furnished with an eclectic array of artefacts and artworks, this room also features a mezzanine level complete with TV and queen-size daybed (which can be used as an extra bed). A walk-in dressing room and ensuite bathroom with Palimanan stone floor, rain shower, stainless steel bathtub, and twin basins complete this suite.

Ginger room

Downstairs, the queen-bedded Ginger room opens out onto a large stone patio area that looks directly over the inviting swimming pool. This room can be accessed from the garden and from a walkway at the rear of the building featuring enormous vase fountains cascading into a fish pond. Splashes of bright orange and purple silk and a white egg-shaped chair inject vitality into the room, contrasting with its polished grey terrazzo floors. Off the bedroom lies a separate dressing area and an ensuite bathroom with Palimanan stone floor, rain shower, stainless steel bathtub, and twin basins.

Cinnamon room

Also located on the ground floor of the main building, the converted study - which is ideal for children - features twin whitewashed teak beds draped with mosquito nets and polished grey terrazzo floors. Like the Ginger room, Cinnamon opens onto the large stone patio facing the pool and can also be accessed from the rear walkway. Funky Japanese doll lampshades light up the room while a white egg-shaped chair sits in one corner. The bathroom is identical to that of the Ginger room.

Guest pavilions (Paprika, Clove and Vertyver)

Three guest bedrooms face the pool in stand-alone pavilions set on lawns sloping down towards the river, each with a patio from which to enjoy the view. The three rooms are similar in design but feature differently hued bathrooms and individual artwork.

Each room is furnished with a queen-size four-poster bed draped with a mosquito net. Ensuite bathrooms feature cobbled stone floors, black marble twin wash basins and rain showers.

Living & Dining Areas

Chalina's 250-square-metre open-sded living and dining area is a highlight of the estate. Cooled with ceiling fans this spectacular two-tiered pavilion with its enormous alang-alang thatched roof provides the ultimate leisure and dining experience.

Guests can relax on the extremely comfortable L-shaped sofas and ottomans set around a coffee table. Vibrant purple and red upholstery, modern sculptures and bright artwork bring this traditional structure to life.

On the upper tier, the dining area is fit for a banquet with its huge wooden table and funky purple wicker chairs. Next to the dining pavilion are ponds filled with water lilies, a cascading waterfall and tall vase fountains which flow gently in the background.

To the rear of the dining area is a fully equipped stainless steel kitchen complete with two ovens and gas burners, microwave, double-door fridge, freezer and coffee machine.
Lounge bar and cinema room

Alongside the river, just in front of the living and dining area, is an air-conditioned lounge bar which adapts to become a comfortable cinema room in the evening. There's plenty of space on the two large daybeds for guests to unwind while beverages are served from a black granite counter. If preferred, the French doors can be opened onto two terraces to make the most of the tropical air; one overlooking the Pangi river and the other facing the pool, shaded with sails and featuring an eight-seater dining table.

The lounge bar boasts a Bose sound system which also feeds music to the garden areas, while a powder room positioned just below is particularly convenient for guests attending weddings and other special events.
Outdoor living

The centrepiece of the villa, the 30 x 8-metre swimming pool sits strategically overlooking the sloping garden and neighbouring rice fields making it the perfect spot for sundowners. Single and double loungers shaded by umbrellas provide poolside comfort, and floating above the water, a comfortable thatched bale makes a magical spot for a massage.

Surrounded by coconut palms and dotted with fragrant frangipanis, the impeccably manicured lawns provide a wonderful setting for yoga and meditation as well as weddings and other special events.

Activities

The villa manager at Chalina Estate will typically have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Invariably some of them will live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here is a taste of some of the  activities on offer within reach of the villa.

  • If you've always dreamed of galloping along a beach or riding through villages bordered by rice fields, now's your chance. Bali Horse Adventure, located five minutes from the villa, can arrange horse riding tours, as well as children's riding lessons and horse-drawn carriage outings.

  • Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.

  • Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali's best surfing beaches, all within easy access. Pererenan Beach is just a 300m stroll or motorbike ride away. Along this stretch of naturally beautiful beaches, Echo Beach, under ten minutes by car, is the most famed surfers haunt, but all are in prime position for Bali?s legendary sunsets.

  • On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali. Bali's first museum/hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques and its award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies. If you're planning a honeymoon, this makes a wonderful first night venue before continuing on with your villa stay.

  • Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot (8km), one of Bali?s biggest tourist magnets. Perched high on a craggy, wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is best savoured at sunset; be sure to receive a blessing from the Hindu priests.

  • Alternatively, view Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Club. Bordered by ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.

  • Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali?s most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars - including much hyped, Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.

  • Drive westwards to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities - treasures that Bali is famed for.

  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu - one of Bali's most important temples.

  • Pulau Dive Charters offers luxury boat charters around the beautiful islands and waters surrounding Bali. They specialise in private fishing, surfing and diving charters and also offer unique personalised day trips to Nusa Lembongan. Perfect for a family day out on the water or with a group of friends.

Services included

Exclusive use of the villa and all its facilities, together with the services of a staff team including villa manager, chef, housekeeping, full-time security, daily breakfast and a car and driver for up to 8 hours a day.

Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus - and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

As well as providing a huge garden for running around in, a cinema room and a 30-metre swimming pool, Chalina Estate has a team of friendly staff who will make children feel as welcome as adults. Having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Sausage sandwiches in the poolside gazebo at six?  Pancakes for breakfast? No problem. The chef, will customise all meals to suit children's taste buds.

Neither do you have to worry about packing all that cumbersome extra equipment when you stay at Chalina Estate as we can provide you with all the essentials, and more - from pool safety fences to baby baths, cots, high chairs and car seats. What we don't have in-house, we can generally hire in for a small fee (click here to see list of available hire items). Just talk through your requirements with us when you make your reservation and we'll make sure it's all there ready and waiting for your arrival.

And when the excitement of exploring the villa starts to wear off, check out our Things to do page; there's plenty in the area to keep all the family amused throughout the holiday.

Dining
A highlight of any holiday is sitting down to a scrumptious meal. At Chalina Estate, our experienced chef and his team are ready to prepare whatever you desire from quick snacks to five-course dinners.

Choose from the delicious menu featuring a Taste of Asia - green papaya salad, classic chilli crab or fried fish in kaffir lime leaves ? and international dishes from gazpacho to fillet of beef in red wine sauce to apple pie with ice cream. We can also prepare a wide range of vegetarian dishes and will strive to meet any special dietary requirements.

Guests are requested to provide a grocery float in advance (including a 20% service charge to cover transport, deliveries and stock ingredients). Four hours notice is required for lunch and dinner selections.

Spa
Chalina Estate offers in-house spa services on request for those guests seeking extra pampering. Relax in the beautiful outdoor areas or the privacy of your own room while receiving Balinese massages, manicures, pedicures, body scrubs, hair-creme baths or facials from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply).

Here's a sample of what's on the menu:

Massage
Release built-up tension with a traditional Balinese massage beside the pool or in the privacy of your bedroom. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.

Weddings
Chalina Estate's gorgeous grounds and facilities make it a fabulous venue for weddings and special events for up to 120 people. The sloping lawns bordering the Pangi river, offering incredible sunset views over neighbouring rice fields and glimpses of the mystical Batukaru volcano in the distance, ensure that guests will never forget this once-in-a lifetime experience.

The large open-sided living and dining pavilion, combined with the neighbouring lounge equipped with a modern bar, Bose sound system and two large terraces, provides a fantastic space for functions.  And the powder room beneath the lounge is conveniently located for easy access from the pool and garden area.

Whether you are planning a traditional Balinese wedding ceremony or an intimate dinner party, celebrations are tailored specifically to your requirements.
