Overview

Welcome to Dea Villas - five tropical garden villas in rural Berawa close to Canggu. A sense of space sets this exclusive enclave apart; each villa comprises living and bedroom pavilions set in its own private gardens with swimming pool, sundeck, lotus ponds and myriad quiet corners.

Two of the villas - the four-bedroom Saraswati and Dewi Sri - are contemporary in design and spread over two floors. Two more  the three-bedroom Amy and four-bedroom Sati - are inspired by Indonesia's cultural heritage, with accommodation spread across a series of joglos (traditional teakwood homes). And the smallest ? the one-bedroom Radha is a rustic antique gladak (cottage) rising on stilts above a lotus pond. All five have stunning interiors full of handsome furniture and a fascinating collection of antiques and artefacts from Southeast Asia, China and Taiwan.

As the five villas can be rented separately or together in many different configurations, Dea Villas is perfect for everyone from couples seeking a romantic retreat, to multiple families holidaying together, right up to large groups of friends requiring all 16 bedrooms. And whether guests seek social space or solitude, they'll never tire of the choices Dea provides.

24-hour butler service assures guests are looked after well, and with the discretion and sensitivity of true hospitality professionals. Among the 29-strong staff that serves the five villas are three chefs, ready to whip up gourmet meals from a well-priced menu of local and international dishes.

Kids will surely gravitate to the playground where the swings, slides, sandpit and Wendy house will keep them occupied while parents recline in the shaded comfort of the nearby balé. Adults get to play too: in the air-conditioned gym (try the Power plate or treadmill), at Dea Spa with twin massage beds and traditional sauna, or at the Dea Boutique.

For entertainment beyond the villa, guests may choose to cycle through the rice fields on the villa bikes, spend time at Berawa Beach less than a kilo meter away, head for the boutiques and bars of Seminyak, or explore Bali's scenic beauty further afield courtesy of a complimentary car and driver.

Accommodation

Villa Radha's Balinese entrance opens to a enchanting garden where large river rocks form stepping stones across the lily pond to a raised century-old Javanese teak wood gladak house fronted by a wide, furnished veranda. (There's another entrance for those who don't want to skip the light fandango over the pond.) Inside is a large teakwood-clad bedroom complete with sitting area. Doors lead to a small kitchenette on one side and a wardrobe and dressing area on the other; both the kitchenette and dressing room open onto a tropical garden bathroom. Across the pond is a second and much smaller gladak which serves as a reading or breakfast room, while across the swimming pool a relaxation balé beckons.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Villa Radha is rustic romance personified - a jungle hideaway surrounded by lotus ponds in a dreamlike world of its own. Inside this traditional teak wood building is a beautifully proportioned bedroom with regal king-size bed and an eclectic collection of chairs. Contrasting with the building?s 100-year history and whimsical furnishings and artefacts are some 21st century features: an upholstered daybed, a 47-inch TV with satellite channels and DVD player, an iPod dock and air-conditioning.

A few steps lead down from the bedroom to an indoor-outdoor bathroom. This space has a more contemporary feel, with polished concrete walls, non-slip floors and a glazed pergola roof. There?s a dressing area, a vanity with twin basins, a walk-in rain shower and a magnificent two-person alfresco bathtub carved out of a single piece of river rock.

Living & Dining Areas

Villa Radha has a surprisingly wide choice of living areas for a one-bedroom property. For air-conditioned comfort, there?s the sitting and TV area within the bedroom while, for breezy alfresco living, the large veranda has a cool, Somerset Maugham-style vibe complete with old planters chairs for reclining at sunset, G&T in hand (nicely chilled thanks to the fridge in the adjoining kitchenette). The smaller gladak with its hatch opening onto a cute mini-me veranda offers an intimate space for reading or breakfasting and is furnished with a small table for three. And at the end of the water-garden, beyond the lagoon-style plunge pool is a sun deck with two loungers and a cushion-covered balé, just the spot to hideaway with a good book. Tucked away in another corner of the garden is a double hammock surrounded by tropical blooms.

Activities

Dea Villas'manager and supervisors will have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the other villa staff about the local area too. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.

  • Explore the scenic rice-field landscape and rural villages by bicycle; a great way to get under the skin of the ?real' Bali. Stop off at a local warung (café) to sample some basic Balinese fare or cool off with a cold drink.Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.

  • Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali's prestigious Canggu Club, with its state-of-the-art gym and tennis and squash courts. Round off your workouts with some fine international dining, then stock up on gourmet goodies at the nearby Deli.

  • Visit the mystical Hotel Tugu (Bali's first museum-hotel) studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques; its award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies. If you're planning a honeymoon, Hotel Tugu makes a wonderful first night venue. The hotel's restaurants offer authentic Chinese and Indonesian fine dining, as well as an international menu, in a variety of unique settings. At the rustic Waroeng Tugu you can taste the traditional Javanese and Balinese cuisine of bygone centuries.

  • Dea Villas is not far from the famous temple at Tanah Lot (14km), although in peak season a few too many tourists may transform a sunset visit into more of a heaving photo opportunity than a moving experience. Visiting early in the morning (8-9am) provides a better idea of the power of the location and the chance to see it undisturbed apart from perhaps an offering ceremony.

  • Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Seminyak, Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, chic boutiques. There is a wide choice of fine dining, mid range, and cheap ?n cheerful restaurants in Seminyak too: fine dining venues include Sarong, the famous Ku Dé Ta, Mama San, La Lucciola, Sardine and Métis.

  • Play a round at the unbelievably scenic Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields and just down from Tanah Lot sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.

  1. Drive westwards to explore the charming Tabanan Regency, revealing terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities. Or head north to explore the volcanic lakes near the mountain town of Bedugul, including Lake Bratan with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu ? one of Bali's most important temples.

  • Explore Bali's backroads, lakes, volcanoes, forests and beaches on the back of a Harley Davidson bike with Island Biker Tours. Full day Harley tours, customised tours or shorter joy rides can all be accommodated.

Additional Notes

Families
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus ? and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

With the exception of the one-bedroom Villa Radha, all the Dea Villas are great for families ?each has at least one twin-bedded room that's perfect for kids, and younger family members will love the shared playground complete with swings, slides, sandpit and Wendy house. (Parents can keep an eye from the shade of the balé).

The team of friendly staff at Dea Villas will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Pancakes by the pool for breakfast?Burger and chips for tea in the Wendy house? No problem. The chef can customise all meals to suit children's taste buds.

Don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids' equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we don't have in-house, we can hire on your behalf (click here to see list of available hire items).

And when the excitement of exploring the villa starts to wear off, check out our Things to do page ? there's plenty in the area to keep kids of all ages amused throughout the holiday.
