Overview

Villa Mako sets the luxury and grandeur of Dutch colonial architecture within the picturesque surroundings of a small Bali village, less than five kilometres from the island's happening west shore.  This three-bedroom Pererenan villa, staffed with an experienced and friendly team of seven, is stately in design, yet warmly decorated with eclectic interiors reflecting the passions and travels of the owners.  Balinese and Javanese antiques and a bold use of colour create a unique and comfortable sanctuary for guests.

The villa's elevated position affords sweeping views over the pool, the surrounding jungle canopy and rice terraces beyond.  The design of this stunning building cleverly uses natural light throughout to highlight the beautiful interiors and every room catches the cool breeze, even during the warmest months of the year, offering guests a choice of air-conditioned comfort and open-air tropical living.

Accommodation

Each of Villa Mako's three bedrooms presents a different and equally luxurious theme.
Each has an ensuite bathroom and is equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fans, a mini-bar/fridge and safe deposit box. The two master bedrooms enjoy soaring roofs and magnificent views together with sunny balconies, furnished with daybeds, overlooking the garden and pool. Fitted with ceiling fans, the balconies are perfect for whiling away the hours with a book or relaxing over morning tea or evening cocktails.

The original colonial design for Villa Mako owes much to the architecture of traditional Javanese plantation houses with the high, wooden-strutted ceilings of the villa's central hall taking their inspiration from an old college in Bandung, Central Java.  The majestic design also incorporates the use of wide eaves and, combined with the elevated position of the land, this allow for beautiful breezes and a flooding of natural light.

Comfort and relaxation are the focus of Villa Mako's plush interiors and furnishings feature oversized sofas, daybeds, poolside loungers and plenty of cushions, so guests will always find a private place for peace and quiet.  In addition to the many indoor and outdoor lounge spaces, guests have the choice of three dining areas, all of which present a unique ambiance.

Set on the outskirts of Bali's tourist areas in the tiny village of Tiying Tutul near Pererenan, Villa Mako sits amid the rhythms of agricultural life and gracefully honours Balinese culture.   Guests are welcome at Hindu ceremonies in the nearby temple, which provide a unique insight into the religion and customs of Bali, while helpful villa staff  a dedicated team of seven, including manager and chef  will be pleased to offer guidance on temple etiquette.  Guests may even be lucky enough to see a barong dance  a sacred ritual staged not for tourists but for the local community to bring good fortune to the village.

Villa Mako is approached via a private driveway with a secure car parking area. At the villa entrance guests are greeted by a pair of Chinese welcome statues guarding a set of double Balinese doors. The doors open to reveal a covered walkway with a pitched roof, which circumvents an ornamental pond complete with a bubbling water feature.

The villa comprises an open-sided fully equipped kitchen and an air-conditioned media room facing each other across the pond while, on the far side, the main building incorporates a living and dining hall and three bedrooms. Beyond the main house, a beautifully landscaped tropical garden, complete with its own serene temple, rolls down manicured lawns to a generously sized swimming pool (with shallow feature suitable for children) and a thatch-roofed dining pavilion. The garden vista flows on to the tropical jungle canopy outside the villa walls and beyond to the surrounding rice terraces creating a picture-perfect backdrop to the serenity of Villa Mako.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Bedroom 1
The Bali room is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed canopied with ikat (traditional hand-woven textile).  The room features polished teak floors and French windows with louvre shutters, which open out onto the terrace and balcony.  Timeworn stained glass doors lead into a large dressing room with a massage bed and fitted cupboards with antique louvre doors.  Another colonial-style door leads into the terrazzo bathroom, fitted with twin wash basins and a powerful overhead rain shower.  A glass skylight in the roof allows the sunlight to stream in above a sunken sculptured terrazzo bathtub.

Bedroom 2
The Colonial room features a polished teak floor, French windows with louvre shutters and a king-size four-poster bed with white drapes and ?snakeskin? cushions.  In the ensuite bathroom is an oversized sunken sculptured terrazzo bathtub, twin washbasins, a rain shower, a massage bed and ceiling fans.  Glass panels in the ceiling give the bathroom an open-air feel and maximise the natural light.

Bedroom 3
The Bamboo room is accessed by double antique doors, and can be set up with two canopied beds (convertible to king-size) for younger guests or as double room.  This bedroom?s ensuite cream terrazzo bathroom is fitted with twin washbasins, ceiling fans, and a rain shower.  Again, in this room, glass windows in the roof maximise the natural light.

Living & Dining Areas

Villa Mako's expansive main living and dining pavilion features folding doors at either end that open wide to allow the cool breezes to circulate.  The soaring roof in this splendid building is 8.5-metres high and is fitted with paddle ceiling fans. Furnishings include a handsome teak dining table for 10; an attractive display of traditional Indonesian artefacts; wooden lamp-stands fashioned from Javanese statues; armchairs and a huge sofa upholstered in soothing neutral tones. A sunny stone terrace doubles the living space, making this a perfect venue for parties.

The open-plan, well-equipped feature kitchen at Villa Mako is fitted in glass and cream terrazzo. To one side is a casual breakfast area furnished with a circular marble-topped table and six brightly cushioned chairs.
In the villa's cosy media room stretch out on the big squashy rainbow-striped sofa or kick back on the leather lay-z-boy chair. This timber-clad room has folding doors that open directly onto the pond, appearing to float above it. Guests can relax in air-conditioned comfort or open the doors wide and be cooled by ceiling fans and natural breezes. The room is equipped with a TV and DVD/CD player and the high quality sound system is linked via a portable iPod docking station to speakers throughout the villa.

A wrought iron gate heralds the stately flight of stone steps leading down to the pool through an avenue of foxtail palms. The beautiful garden then rolls down to a river located behind its boundary walls. While the delicately crafted gate is an attractive feature in itself, it separates the main house from the pool creating a safety barrier for young children.

The 14-metre mango-shaped swimming pool incorporates a large platform (15cm deep) for kids, and is filled with chlorinated water.
Sun-seekers will relish the cushioned loungers arranged on the pool's stone terrace, and a relaxation balé, fitted out in colourful comfort, provides a pleasant shady alternative. Opposite the balé is a barbecue pavilion with a dining table for six, a fridge, and speakers for the sound system. A convenient washroom is situated just behind.

Activities

Do also ask the staff about the local area.  Invariably some of them will live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
  • In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.
  • Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali¡s best surfing beaches, only ten to fifteen minutes away.  Among the string of naturally beautiful beaches, don?t miss long-time surfers haunt, Echo Beach ? but all are in prime position for Bali?s legendary sunsets.
  • On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali.  Listed in the Robb Report (the World's Best of the Best), Bali's first museum-hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques.  The boutique hotel's award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies.
  • Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali's biggest tourist magnets.  Perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is most popular at sunset, but we suggest guests go early morning to enjoy the location in peace!
  • Fashionistas and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants  such as Sarong and Metis, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Drive west to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black sand beaches dotted with fishing communities the treasures that Bali is famed for.
  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, head north to Mount Batukaru with its major temple and the nearby rice-fields of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage sight; or to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu  one of Bali's most important temples.
  • Take the villa's bikes out for a spin and cycle round local villages or down to Pererenan and Echo Beaches.

Additional Notes

Families
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want.  Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus  and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Villa Mako's owners designed their villa specifically with their two young daughters in mind:  there's plenty of open space for running around, a gate separates the main building from the pool; one of the bedrooms is furnished and decorated in kid-friendly fashion and there's a cosy TV room with DVDs, toys and a library of children?s books.  Families with very young children will need to take care around the unfenced lily ponds at the villa though.

The team of friendly staff at Villa Mako will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although equipped kitchens allow you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest.  Burgers in the balé for tea?  Poolside pancakes for breakfast?  No problem.  The chef will customise all meals to suit children's taste buds.

And don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids' equipment for your stay.  Just let us know what you need; anything we don't have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, highchair, children's board games, books, DVDs and pool toys) we can hire on your behalf (click here to see list of available hire items).

Dining
Villa Mako offers guests the choice of ordering meals from an extensive and varied suggestion menu of Balinese and international dishes or working with the chef to design meals according to individual tastes.  The chef is more than willing to experiment with new recipes and ingredients and has both English and Indonesian versions of several cookbooks to ease translation.

Balinese cuisine is rich and well seasoned, but not overly spicy.  The chef can accommodate the seasoning of Indonesian dishes to suit different palates.  The villa is close to the coast so fresh seafood is usually easy to source (good squid and prawns as well as fish and small lobsters).  The chef's specialties include a Balinese banquet and a seafood barbecue feast.

To get the most out of the kitchen, it is useful to plan meals with the cook the evening before, or over breakfast, allowing plenty of time for deliveries and shopping to be done.  Meat is sourced from quality suppliers and the chef will buy other ingredients from the market daily.  Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance, and the staff will present receipts for reference.  Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price plus 20% ++handling fee.

Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage?  Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of Villa Mako, in the pool balé, or on one of the massage beds in the master bedroom ensuites  by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply).  Here's a sample of what's on the menu:

Balinese massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage.  Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, which correspond to every part of the body.  Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth.  A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve.  Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
