Overview
Villas like Sungai Tinggi are few and far between. This enchanting, traditionally inspired family home is a travel destination in itself, set within a vast 2.7-hectare estate that boasts over 100 metres of absolute beach frontage looking onto one of Canggu's renowned surf breaks.
Villa Sungai Tinggi (meaning 'high river') was designed by long-term Bali residents as a spacious and comfortable family home. Created in the style of a traditional Balinese compound, the villa comprises a series of living and sleeping pavilions oriented for optimum privacy as well as for the glorious ocean views. The liberal use of local materials ? exotic hardwood and terrazzo floors, coral-limestone walls and vaulted alang?alang thatched roofs ? is testimony to the owners' passion for Bali, as is their stunning collection of museum-quality art and artefacts that contribute to the villa's unique character and charm.
This appreciation for the local environment extends to the villa's magnificent tropical gardens, which make a dream setting for a tropical wedding celebration. Soft rolling lawns dotted with fragrant frangipanis and swaying coconut palms hug the landscape's natural contours, while a free-form 18-metre infinity swimming pool blends seamlessly with the ocean stretching to the horizon. A circular deck provides ringside seats for viewing Bali's spectacular sunsets, and a traditional thatched balé decorated in black and white check makes an inviting respite from the sun. Work on your serve at the tennis court, arrange for a soothing massage in your room, or gather for cocktails in the impressive living pavilion. With such a choice of social and private space, Villa Sungai Tinggi is perfect for families or groups of friends.
Villa Sungai Tinggi's friendly staff pride themselves in taking good care of their guests, love children, and have a wicked sense of humour. From cooking delicious Balinese meals to preparing your canopied bed at night and running your rose?petal bath, they will ensure your stay at Villa Sungai Tinggi is truly memorable in every detail. And should you wish to explore beyond the villa, a car and driver are at your disposal for sightseeing, shopping and adventure.
Accommodation
Villa Sungai Tinggi has been designed to optimize its extraordinary beachfront setting and ocean views. A large open-sided living pavilion fashioned after a traditional Balinese wantilan (village meeting hall) forms the villa's central hub. To the left is the master bedroom pavilion, with separate study (which doubles as an additional bedroom). To the right, a two-storey building contains three guest bedrooms and a lounge (which can also be converted to a bedroom). Set well back from the living and dining pavilions is a chef's kitchen and staff service area. In between, a path leads to the full-size tennis court (shared with a neighboring villa).
All living areas and bedrooms overlook the lush gardens, 18-metre swimming pool and sundeck, and the sloping lawns leading to the beach and ocean.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Master suite
Sungai Tinggi's master bedroom is spectacular. Here, an exquisite collection of antiques and artefacts vie for attention with the ocean view beyond the private terrace. From behind the four-poster king-size bed, a Buddha statue casts its protective eyes over sleeping guests, while armchairs around a small round table provide a cosy spot for morning coffee. Hidden behind traditional carved doors is a dressing area. Equally impressive in size and décor is the garden bathroom, with open-air shower, twin washbasins and a circular terrazzo bathtub for two.
Three guest bedrooms
Villa Sungai Tinggi's three guest bedrooms feature whitewashed four-poster king-size beds, draped in mosquito netting and dressed with crisp white linen and batik cushions that contrast nicely against the Bengkirai wood floor. The two downstairs rooms open onto the garden, while the upstairs bedroom opens onto a terrace with panoramic ocean views. Each comes with an iPod dock, air-conditioning and ceiling fan. All three ensuite bathrooms are individually designed ? one with a sunken terrazzo tub, one with an alfresco shower, and the upstairs bathroom with a shower looking out over rice-fields.
Two optional bedrooms
If extra space is required, an additional two rooms can be converted to bedrooms to sleep another four guests (for a small additional charge).
Living & Dining Areas
Indoor living
The huge open-sided wantilan-style living pavilion is Villa Sungai Tinggi's social hub. Cooled by ceiling fans and sea breezes, it accords guests spectacular views across the garden towards the ocean from a variety of seating areas set on cream terrazzo floors under a soaring two-tiered roof. Huge sofas-provide comfortable space for lounging. A magnificent Saurwood table seats 14 for formal dining, while a smaller breakfast table provides a more intimate space for four and the coconut-shell bar is the perfect setting for sundowners and cookery demonstrations.
From the living pavilion a covered boardwalk leads to the villa's kitchen ? well equipped and beautifully decorated with a design palette of cream terrazzo and lime-washed teak.
Incorporated within the master bedroom pavilion is the TV lounge (which can be converted to an extra bedroom for two with attached shower room if required) handsomely furnished, with shelves of books and fascinating artefacts adorning every surface, this room makes an ideal retreat for a quiet read, or for watching a movie on the flat-screen TV, which is artfully concealed within an antique Indonesian cabinet.
The upper floor lounge above the guest bedrooms is blessed with panoramic ocean views. Its wide windows can be flung open to catch the sea breeze or closed for air-conditioned comfort, while rattan chairs and a huge daybed make this a comfortable retreat at any time of the day. This room can also be converted to a bedroom if required.
Outdoor living
Sungai Tinggi's owners have lavished much love and attention into creating the villa's lush landscaped gardens; fishponds with bubbling water features, fragrant frangipanis and tropical coconut palms all mix harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment. From the living pavilion, manicured lawns of Japanese grass roll towards the beach, and the natural green-stone pool ? free-form in design ? is perfect for refreshing dips. Sun seekers will enjoy lounging on the poolside deck and the garden balé is just the spot for sea-breeze-cooled siestas. As night falls, dinner can be served at the poolside table under a canopy of stars.

Location
Villa Sungai Tinggi is blessed with a sublime beachfront location near the rural village of Pererenan on Bali's south-west coast. Here guests can take a leisurely sunset stroll along the quiet beach, surf on one of the island's best breaks, or admire the fishermen in their brightly coloured jungles hauling in the daily catch. In this traditional rural setting, where daily offerings at the village temple and meticulous tending of rice fields are the norm, guests are privy to a real slice of local Bali life.
However, should the bright city lights beckon, the upmarket restaurants, bars and shops of cosmopolitan Seminyak are just a 30-minute drive away.

Activities
The villa manager at Villa Sungai Tinggi will typically have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
In the meantime, here's a taste of some of the activities on offer within reach of the villa.Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali's best surfing beaches, all are within easy access and Pererenan is right on your doorstep. Among these naturally beautiful beaches, Echo Beach is perhaps the most famed surfers haunt, but all are in prime position for Bali's legendary sunsets.
- Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali's best surfing beaches, all are within easy access and Pererenan is right on your doorstep. Among these naturally beautiful beaches, Echo Beach is perhaps the most famed surfers haunt, but all are in prime position for Bali's legendary sunsets.
- On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali. Bali's first museum/hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques and its award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies. Or try the more casual cafe across the road; Old Man's for alfresco all day dining.
- Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali's biggest tourist magnets. Perched high on a craggy, wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is best savoured at sunset but is less busy in the mornings; be sure to receive a blessing from the Hindu priests.
- Alternatively, view Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Club. Bordered by ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
- Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars - including much hyped, Ku Dé Ta, Petitenget and The Potato Head Beach Club.
- Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.
- Drive westwards to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains including Mt Batukaru and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities - treasures that Bali is famed for.
- For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu ? one of Bali's most important temples.
- Explore the scenic rice-field landscape and rural villages by bicycle (there are four at the villa for guest use); a great way to get under the skin of the 'real' Bali. Stop off at a local warung (café) to sample some basic Balinese fare or cool off with a cold drink.
Services included
Exclusive use of the villa and all its facilities, including the services of a villa manager, chef, villa attendants, and a car and driver for up to eight hours a day.
Additional Notes
Families
Villa holidays are an excellent option for families, with access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus - and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.Villa Sungai Tinggi provides plenty of space for youngsters, with an 18-metre swimming pool, large rolling lawns and shared tennis court - not to mention the beach on the doorstep just waiting to be explored. The team of friendly staff will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time baby sitting incurs a small extra cost).
Don't worry about packing all those cumbersome extras for your stay: the villa already has the essentials, and anything we don't have we can order in for a small fee. Just let us know in advance what you will need (click here to see list of available hire items).
Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily do this for you - just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or cook and they will take care of the rest. Tasty sandwiches after tennis? Pancakes by the pool for breakfast? No problem. All meals can be customised to suit children's taste buds.
Dining
Take advantage of the villa's experienced kitchen team who are at your service to prepare delicious home-style meals. The villa offers a suggestion menu featuring Asian and international dishes to cater to all tastes with an excellent selection of vegetarian and children's options. Be sure to sample some of the local Balinese delicacies such as Soto Ayam (chicken soup) and traditional Rendang (beef curry). Or, with the abundance of sea food on your door step, ask one of the cooks to grill up the catch of the day on the barbecue. If guests have specific requests the cooks are more than happy to tailor meals accordingly and accommodate any special dietary requirements. To make the most of the kitchen and give staff time to shop, it is a good idea to plan meals the evening before. (Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price. Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance and the staff will do the shopping for you and keep the receipts for your reference.)
Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage? Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of your own villa by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply). Here's a sample of what's on the menu:Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage by the pool or in the relaxation bale. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.
Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet that correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.
Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.
Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
