Accommodation

With sublime style and space galore, Villa Zelie is a unique and enchanting choice for your Bali villa holiday.  Hidden on a residential lane, less than 150-metres from the beach in south-west Bali, this luxurious five-bedroom Canggu villa is a stunning find.

Engraved timber doors swing open to reveal sprawling tropical gardens, a shimmering 20-metre swimming pool and inviting spots to socialise or sink into restful peace.  Grand open-sided living pavilions and individual air-conditioned bedroom suites are fashioned from teak and ironwood, with architecture inspired by Javanese palaces, and exquisitely furnished with French flair.

Antique furniture, tribal décor and original art from around the world give Villa Zelie a decidedly unique character.  Not quite traditional.  Not exactly colonial, either.  Everything is perfectly put together to achieve a timeless elegance.

Both rustic-chic and wonderfully modern, Villa Zelie is a special place to share with family and friends.  For some it?s a why-leave spa retreat; for some a poolside paradise, and for others an entertainment zone complete with bar and drop-down projector screen.  One day it?s family holiday heaven and the next, an intimate wedding venue.

Versatile Villa Zelie is staffed with a villa manager, chef, butlers, housekeeping and groundskeepers to ensure effortless leisure. Massage therapists and babysitters are on call.  The helpful villa manager doubles as a local guide, arranging airport transfers, trips to nearby restaurants and attractions, as well as island tours with a private car and driver.

While Villa Zelie is tucked away in a quiet pocket of Canggu, it?s also mere minutes from beach clubs, shops and acclaimed restaurants, as well as being conveniently connected to the rest of Bali.  The one thing that Villa Zelie is far from is ordinary.

Villa Zelie has a terraced Balinese garden with multiple pavilions offering tropical luxury.  Perched at the top of the grounds are side-by-side open-air living and entertainment pavilions and a kitchen.  The second terrace is shared by the large dining pavilion and a guestroom.  Next is the swimming pool, spanning almost the entire the width of the property and punctuated by the pool house.  At the foot of the grounds is the master suite, flanked by three gladak guest suites and a two-storey massage balé tucked away for peace and quiet.

Living & Dining Areas

Indoor living
Bali is known for barefoot luxury and the level of stylish comfort at Villa Zelie is off the chart ahh-mazing.  The living, entertainment and dining pavilions are completely open-sided, so the lush tropical ambiance is welcomed in.  All are kept comfortably cool by soaring roofs with traditional Javanese hand-carved beams and ceiling fans.

The spacious living pavilion is on an elevated platform that appears to float within a moat of serene Koi ponds.  Deeply cushioned couches overlook the sprawling lawns.  The adjacent entertainment pavilion features a timber-topped bar, cosy lounge sitting area, movie projector, backgammon table and bookshelves packed with books, board games and fascinating antiques.

Meals are enjoyed in the delightful open-sided dining pavilion, framed by fragrant gardenia bushes, giant taro, traveller's palms and other exotic plants next to a tidy lawn.  The room is equipped with Sonos speakers and decorated with a museum-calibre art collection featuring Indonesian tribal pieces, sculptures and ceramic pots. The massive wood table seats up to 14 guests on Javanese benches with hand-carved embellishments and elegant cushions.

A modest kitchen at the head of the dining pavilion is equipped with modern appliances.  A large island block at the centre is edged by tall stools, where guests can enjoy a snack or chat with the chef.

Outdoor living
While the swimming pool (which includes a shallow area, ideal for young children, on one side) glimmers in full sun, the pool house beckons with the promise of repose in the shade.  It's the smallest and most casual of the open-air pavilions at Villa Zelie.  Driftwood seabirds hang from the pendopo roof.  Daybeds face the radiant stone-edged swimming pool and there are baskets full of fresh towels.  Inviting indeed.

Double sunbeds hem the lengths of the swimming pool; some enjoy dappled sunlight beneath towering frangipani trees whilst others are positioned for maximum sun.  They look super-stylish on the lawn, flanked by symmetrical pisang kodok plants and with petrified wood side tables within arm's reach.

And everything here is woven into a beautiful patchwork of rice paddy terraces and private homes. Activities

Some of the popular things to do in Canggu and greater Bali may require planning ahead, so please let us know how we can help.

Your manager will have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required.  Do also ask the staff about the local area.  Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
May we start by suggesting a few activities for your visit?

  • Within walking distance of Villa Zelie, Kayu Putih Beach is perfect for surfing, bodysurfing and sand play, although the current can be too strong for swimming at times.  You'll find surfboard rentals available as well as casual surfing lessons for beginner and intermediate surfers.  A few beach clubs are within walking distance along the sand as well.
  • Hire an instructor for a yoga or Pilates session at the villa or join a class at one of the many studios making their way into an evolving wellness scene in Canggu: Sunset Pilates at The Joglo Café, Hatha yoga at The Practice, Fly High yoga at Samadi Bali, flow yoga at The Canggu Studio.
  • Finn's Recreation Club has a modern gym, tennis courts, an outdoor sports field, a lap pool, fitness classes and programmes, personal trainers, a high-end spa, and eateries on the south side of Canggu nearby Villa Zelie.  The centre is home to Cubby Kids' Club, Strike Ten Pin Bowling, Bounce Trampoline Centre and Splash Waterpark.  Day passes are available.
  • The most exclusive Bali trekking tour promises breath-taking vistas and heart-warming encounters while supporting sustainable social change in the once-forgotten villages of Muntigunung.
  • Bali Equestrian Centre offers pony rides at the Canggu stables and horseback riding tours along the beach or scenic rice paddies
  • At the end of a day out, Echo Beach in Canggu is the preferred spot for fresh seafood barbeque without a trip to Jimbaran Bay.  It's best to arrive early as the casual beachfront restaurants here fill up by six o'clock for dinner with a sunset ocean view.
  • Reservations are recommended for dining out in downtown Canggu and Seminyak restaurants.  Bali's dining scene is constantly evolving with new tastes and experiences all the time.
  • Ask your villa manager what's on at Ulekan restaurant or Hotel Tugu, where live music and traditional Balinese Legong dance performances are often staged.
  • Visiting a temple may come with a chance to watch Balinese dances and ceremonies, too  Pura Luhur Uluwatu in south Bali offers a daily Kecak dance performance and Ubud Palace in central Bali is known for its Legong show.
  • Coral reefs around Bali are teeming with tropical marine life.  Charter a private speedboat or yacht tour for fishing, snorkelling or diving in Amed, Nusa Lembongan or Menjangan Island.
  • Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.

Additional Notes

Families
Villa holidays overflow with family friendly advantages.  Among them is having access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want.  The whole family will be captivated by Villa Zelie. While kids revel in having free reign of the grounds, the villa's privacy and security will give parents peace of mind.   The 20-metre swimming pool at the heart of the villa is sure to be the focus of fun for older kids, and a shallow area to the side is ideal for toddlers and babies.  When it's time to seek shelter from the sun, enjoy some family fun playing board games in the entertainment pavilion, which also has a projector screen.  Even watching movies at Villa Zelie is a unique experience.

Kids can join in family-style dining and the chef will be happy to modify the spiciness of dishes to suit their taste buds.  Alternatively, you are free to use the kitchen as you would at home or simply let the chef in on how mum makes it? to keep your brood happy.  Zelie's staff are wonderful with kids and will make them feel very welcome, while full-time babysitters can be organised with advance notice, should mums and dads fancy some kid-free time beyond the villa.

Two additional beds (extra charges apply) can be set up either in the parents' suites or in one of the guest suites - transforming it into a slumber party dorm.  High chairs and baby cots are available, as well as other children's items, so you can travel without the burden of bulky kids' equipment

When the novelty of exploring the villa grounds wears off, the Canggu neighbourhood offers a great choice of kid-friendly restaurants and family attractions.  And then there's the beach, just a few moments' walk away.  The sea can be pretty wild along the Canggu coast, so be careful to swim only between the yellow flags of the lifeguarded areas.  Finns and Potato Head beach clubs are both within a couple of kilometres of Villa Zelie, offering more beachside fun.

Dining
Villa Zelie is foodies? paradise found.  Many of Bali's most acclaimed restaurants are just a couple kilometres from the villa in trendy Canggu and upscale Seminyak, but nothing beats the convenience and privacy of sharing gourmet meals at the villa prepared by your personal chef

The menus
The full-time chef at Villa Zelie prepares a wide range of delicious family-style meals, including Balinese dishes, Indonesian cuisine and international food. Indonesian food is made with plenty of aromatic herbs and spices and can be surprisingly fiery.  Be sure to try kemangi, a fragrant zesty basil that's a favourite flavour for many.  All dishes can be tailored to your personal tastes so let us know your dining preferences  hot or mild, light or hearty, adventurous or selective.  The kitchen team can also stock the refrigerator with your favourite snacks and tipples , just let them know what you'd like added to the shopping list.

Grocery system
Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price with 20% plus handling fee  which is also subject to government tax and service charges.  Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance, and the staff will do the shopping and keep the receipts for reference.  To make the most of the kitchen and give staff time to shop, it is a good idea to plan meals the evening before.

Spa
A two-storey building in the style of a traditional lumbung (rice barn) makes a dreamy spot for a massage at Villa Zelie.  Professional therapists carry out spa and beauty treatments in the open-air downstairs area with its canopy of white linen or in the total privacy of the quaint attic-like upstairs.  In the latter, choose between air-conditioning or a sea breeze (you can see the ocean from the bay window) and a soundtrack of rhythmic ocean waves or your choice of music.  Alternatively, you can ask for massage beds to be set up in your room, or at the poolside.  Before you sink into deep relaxation, ask staff to prepare a flower petal bath in your suite to extend the indulgence.

See your villa manager for a full spa menu and to request appointments (extra charges apply).  Here is a sample of what to expect:

Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage.  Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet corresponding to every part of the body.  Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth.  A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve.  Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.

Transport
Your villa manager will be pleased to assist with transport arrangements. Metered taxis are readily available or a chauffered car can be hired.
