Overview
Accommodation
With such a fascinating history, no wonder Villa Batujimbar has attracted celebrity guests over the years. Today's guests are following in the footsteps of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall (who got married here), Sting (who gave an impromptu concert), Yoko Ono, and members of the Thai and Malaysian and British royal families. In such splendid surroundings, and pampered by a team of staff that includes a private chef, personal butlers and villa manager, you can look forward to royal treatment too.
Influenced by traditional Balinese family living, Villa Batujimbar comprises a series of alang-alang thatched pavilions spread through the substantial estate. At its centre is the Lembu Bale a moated double-storey brick-built pavilion which houses an open-sided lounge on its upper floor looking onto the swimming pool on one side and across the gardens to the ocean on the other.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Villa Batujimbar offers nine spacious air-conditioned bedrooms, each oriented for privacy in five separate pavilions. Seven have ensuite bathrooms while the two Family Pavilion bedrooms, one designed for kids share a shower room. All have contemporary luxuries such as 40-inch or 32-inch satellite channel TVs, safes and bar fridges, matched with historic paintings, collectibles, furniture and oriental rugs that hark back to the villa's distinguished heritage.
Bedroom 1
The grand, two-storey master suite is situated close to the ocean, just behind the beachfront living balé. On the ground floor of this palatial pavilion is a peaceful study and sitting area furnished with a large antique writing desk and an elegant chaise longue. Walls are lined with teak shelving and display units and, in one corner is a circular glass-topped table for four and a bar area.
Upstairs an ornately carved, king-size, four-poster bed luxuriates below a lofty alang-alang thatched roof. Warm teakwood flooring and richly coloured antique rugs adorn the floor and a comfortable sofa at the foot of the bed faces a large flat-screen TV. A delightful private furnished balcony overlooks the ocean to the front of the room.
A WC leads from the upper-floor bedroom and a full bathroom lies just down the stairs, adjoining the study and sitting room.
Living & Dining Areas
One of the pleasures of a sojourn at Villa Batujimbar is the sheer amount of living space. While there's plenty of room for a full house to socialise under the same roof, there are also lots of quiet corners for breaking away from the crowd.
The main living pavilion is open to the garden alongside the beach; its soaring alang-alang roof supported by towering coconut columns. Three sides of the pavilion are lined with comfortably upholstered built-in benches and at its centre four traditional Indonesian sofas with curved teakwood frames are set around an elaborately carved coffee table.
A breezy, fan-cooled lounge graces the upper level of the historic Lembu Balé, reached by a pair of stately staircases. With its roof supported by elaborate columns rooted in sandstone plinths carved in the shape of animals and mythical figures, this space is defined by two monumental bovine statues (lembu means cow in the Indonesian language). Cane and teak colonial-style seating provides the perfect spot to enjoy the sea view.
The Poolside Pavilion's living area provides yet another space for relaxation, with clusters of handsome seating, an alcove carpeted with thick comfy cushions, and a breakfast table facing the pool. There's a small kitchenette and a guest shower room tucked out of sight.
Guests have a choice of dining areas. Towards the beach is an enchanting raised dining bale with antique marble table and ten rattan chairs set under a thatched roof. For formal meals, there's an air-conditioned dining room in the Longhouse, where a 12-seater stunning teakwood table faces sliding glass doors that open onto fish ponds. Next to the dining room is a huge professionally equipped kitchen and, behind, a staff service kitchen and laundry.

Activities
Villa Batujimbar's manager will have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
- There is a 9-hole golf course at the Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur, but golf enthusiasts might want to travel further afield to Bali Golf and Country Club in Nusa Dua for 18-hole courses.
- Take the kids to Jenggala Ceramics (now based in nearby Jimbaran but originally started in the grounds of Batujimbar Estate itself) where they can glaze their own pottery while you shop for special souvenirs of this famous Bali-ware.
- An annual international kite festival takes place at Padang Galak beach (just north of Sanur) every July. Traditional Balinese giant kites up to ten metres in length are made and flown competitively by teams from different villages around Bali. Originally, these kites were intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods to create abundant crops and harvests. Aside from the festival itself, visitors will see many giant kites being flown in this area from June through to August.
- Saba Bay Horse Riding has a special horseriding track (suitable for beginners) on a beautiful black sandy beach overlooking the Indian Ocean and Nusa Penida Island.
- There are several dive operators around Sanur, but this area is more suited to beginners or refresher courses. The better dive sites are further North in Tulumben, or out on the islands of Nusa Penida and Lembongan.
- Explore Bali's backroads, lakes, volcanoes, forests and beaches on the back of a Harley Davidson bike with Island Biker Tours. Full day Harley tours, customised tours or shorter joy rides can all be accommodated.
- If you are a bold and brave bargain hunter, a spree within the heart of Bali's bustling provincial capital is an exciting and rewarding experience. Visit Denpasar's vibrant markets, where everything and anything is available. Pasar Badung, Denpasar's colourful central market, is the largest and oldest market in Bali. Here's where the local people shop, and each of the market's three floors is dedicated to different products.
- Le Mayeur Museum in Sanur is the former home of noted Belgian impressionist Adrian Jean Le Mayeur. The building is now a museum which, as well as showcasing the artist's work, gives visitors an insight into what it must have been like to be one of Bali's very first expats. Although in need of some maintenance, this remains one of Bali's true hidden treasures.
- From the roaming Sumatran tigers and elephants in the jungle of Sumatra, to the hippos and cheetahs at Lake Manyara, the Safari Journey at Bali Safari and Marine Park offers a unique adventure. There?s also a Fresh Water Aquarium at the Park, as well as the Hanoman Court, which introduces exotic birds and orangutans, and is the main stage for animal educational and entertainment shows.
Full-size tennis court (rackets and balls supplied); and 2 canoes.

Villa Batujimbar's chef is at your service to prepare daily breakfast, lunch and dinner in the villa's professionally equipped kitchen. Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage? Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments, carried out by fully trained therapists (extra charges apply), in one of the many peaceful corners tucked within the grounds of Villa Batujimbar or in the privacy of your room. Here's a sample of what's on the menu:Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body you will feel totally relaxed in no time.
Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet that correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.
Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.
Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
