Overview
Situated absolutely beachfront, where river meets ocean on south-east Bali's near-deserted Pabean Beach, Villa Pushpapuri is blessed with captivating views of the pounding surf, mystical Mount Agung and the island of Nusa Penida. This beautiful secluded villa, surrounded by nature and wrapped in luxury, has everything to offer guests looking for a Bali seaside retreat.
Only an easy 30-minute drive from the airport, Pushpapuri is approached through terraced rice fields, tobacco plantations, papaya and banana groves, beyond which the sea is tantalisingly framed within the villa's entrance, which is bordered by fish ponds, carved stone friezes and bubbling water features.
Fabulous for families and wonderful for weddings, this contemporary villa presents four richly decorated bedrooms, including a grand master suite with views from its upper-floor sitting room to inspire the writer and poet in us all. For relaxing and entertaining, Pushpapuri offers a splendid living and dining pavilion and a well-equipped games room, each complemented by the finest furnishings and five-star service.
Outside in the terraced coconut-grove garden rolling down to the beach is an enticing 20-metre infinity-edge lap pool, complete with furnished sun deck, pool bar and relaxation pavilion. Alongside the villa is the jungle-fringed River Wos on the final meander of its journey to the sea. Take a seat at the pool bar and admire the butterflies, birds and pounding surf; enjoy breakfast on the terrace, or a romantic dinner on the beachside lawn. Just let our staff know your wishes and they will take care of the rest
Accommodation
Villa Pushpapuri comprises four pavilions: the main living and dining pavilion elevated above the garden and pool, with the games room tucked beneath it; the master pavilion offering magnificent views from its bedroom as well as its upper-floor sitting room and study, and two single-storey pavilions bordered by ornamental ponds, housing the three guest bedrooms. In the terraced coconut-grove garden, lawns step down towards the beach encompassing a 20-metre pool, cabana bar and relaxation pavilion on their way.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Green room (Master suite)
Swathed in soothing green ? from the wall coverings to the shimmering curtains to the sheer drapes and silk cushions ornamenting the four-poster bed ? Villa Pushpapuri's master bedroom is romance personified, and the unobstructed ocean views from the bed and sundeck are breathtaking. Carved doors lead to the marble-floored dressing area and bathroom, which incorporates a gorgeous outdoor enclosure bathed in diffused light with a rain shower, an indulgent jacuzzi tub and a fish pond.
Behind a door in the master bedroom, stairs lead to the upper floor where a sitting room is furnished with two sofas, which can be converted into a bed for a child. The adjacent study has the best views in the house ? no one wants to be working when they're on holiday but if you really must check your emails (or write that novel!) then this is the place to do it.
Beige room
Themed in earth tones, guest bedroom one has a soaring roof, a built-in daybed and sliding glass doors on two sides ensuring space, natural light, and views and sounds of the sea from the bed. The room's queen-size, four-poster bed sits on a wooden plinth atop a marble floor and is enveloped in shimmering organza netting. A semi-open-air garden bathroom is fitted with a rain shower next to a fish pond, which provides the soothing sounds of falling water.
Purple room and orange Room
Named for their vibrant colour schemes, and sharing a pavilion, which makes them ideal for kids or a family, these two guest rooms (purple is queen-bedded; orange has twins convertible to a king) are playful and funky with high ceilings, shimmering curtains and nets wrapped around four-poster beds. The ensuite garden bathrooms are both fitted with rain showers ? the purple room also boasting a luxurious sunken bathtub.
All bedrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with flat-screen satellite-channel TVs and DVD/CD players.
Living & Dining Areas
Living and dining pavilion
Presiding over the garden is the living and dining pavilion, with glass doors that slide open on three sides allowing the sea breezes to permeate. Here, you will be mesmerised by the sight and sound of the waves while relaxing in the sitting area or dining at the circular table, which is conveniently positioned close to the kitchen. A sunny terrace at the front invites you to step outside for alfresco feasts.
Outdoor living
Dotted with towering coconut palms, the
terraced garden is perfect for weddings. Smooth, beautifully manicured
lawns flank both sides of the 20-metre infinity-edge swimming pool,
separated from the beach only by a small green border of coastal
convolvulus. The stone pool deck is thoughtfully shaped to accommodate
the trunk of a tall palm tree, which, along with a pair of red
umbrellas, provides shade for the sun loungers.
A cabana bar at
one end of the swimming pool provides a shady spot for sipping cold
beers or fresh fruit juices. At the other end is a large bale pavilion
where mattresses and cushions are positioned for lying back and enjoying
the view; this is also an ideal spot for a relaxing massage.
Games room
Situated below the living and dining pavilion, the air-conditioned games room features a curved ceiling reminiscent of a wine cellar and is equipped with a pool table, dart board, bar with six stools, and a large satellite-channel TV and DVD player. Despite being below ground level, there is plenty of natural light in the games room thanks to sliding glass doors onto a cool garden courtyard.

Location
Villa Pushpapuri is located on the River Wos estuary at Pabean Beach, in the villa of Ketewel in south-east Bali. Bordered by rice fields, tobacco plantations, papaya, banana and coconut groves, the property is blessed with spectacular sea views extending towards the southern beaches, Nusa Penida Island and Mt Agung.
Pabean was once a small port used by oriental traders, the neighbouring village of Saba produced Bali's finest Legong dancers, and local temple ceremonies are a common sight. The river estuary is full of birdlife, while the glistening black-sand beach offers beautiful walks; it is popular with surfers but swirling currents (and no lifeguards) make it unsafe for swimming.
This idyllic coastal retreat offers a chance to experience traditional rural Balinese life, but is only 30 minutes' drive from the airport, the fascinating cultural capital of Ubud, and the boutiques, bars and dining delights of Seminyak. With a car and driver at your disposal, Villa Pushpapuri is perfectly placed for exploring the best of Bali.

Activities
Villa Pushpapuri's manager has a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange sight-seeing and other activities and make any bookings required. Do also ask other staff about the local area. Invariably some of them will live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.
- Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.
- The stretch of beach between Sanur and Ketewel is well known as a surfer's heaven (especially in East Coast Season, which runs from round about November to May, when the winds turn offshore on this side of the island), but beginners should be aware of strong, swirling currents. Good breaks can be found in front of the Grand Bali and Sanur Beach Hotels, while surf spots really close to Pushpapuri include Keramas, Ketewel and Cucukan.
- Sukawati is famous for its cheap local arts and crafts market although better quality goods can be had in Ubud (art), Celuk (silverware) and Mas (woodwork).
- Le Mayeur Museum in Sanur is the former home of noted Belgian impressionist Adrian Jean Le Mayeur. The building is now a museum which, as well as showcasing the artist's work, gives visitors an insight into what it must have been like to be one of Bali's very first expats. Although in need of some maintenance, this remains one of Bali's true hidden treasures.
- An annual international kite festival takes place at Padang Galak beach (just north of Sanur) every July. Traditional Balinese giant kites up to ten metres in length are made and flown competitively by teams from different villages around Bali. Originally, these kites were intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods to create abundant crops and harvests. Aside from the festival itself, visitors will see many giant kites being flown in this area from June through to August.
- Saba Bay Horse Riding has a special horse riding track (suitable for beginners) on a beautiful black sandy beach overlooking the Indian Ocean and Nusa Penida Island.
- Bali Safari & Marine Park offers a fun family day out. Home to hundreds of amazing animals representing more than 50 species, it presents a tram ride through the animal enclosures, a marine aquarium, a theatre, animal educational and entertainment shows, as well as the Fun Zone where visitors can get wet and wild in the Waterpark or embark on a Jungle Cruise.
- There are several dive operators around Sanur, but this area is more suited to beginners or refresher courses. The better dive sites are further north in Tulumben, or out on the islands of Nusa Penida and Lembongan.
- Fashionistas and shop-a-holics should drive over to the west coast where you'll find Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, indulge in globally inspired gourmet restaurants, stylish boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars ? including the much-hyped Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.
- Don't miss the scenic drive up to Bali's cultural and artistic hub, Ubud. This is the best place to catch traditional Balinese dance performances ? especially at the town's Royal Palace, magically illuminated at night. Ubud has also recently evolved as an upmarket destination, boasting cutting-edge restaurants and world-class spas.
Services included
Rates at Villa Pushpapuri include exclusive use of the villa and all its facilities, including the services of a villa manager, chef, 24-hour butler and 8 hour car & driver at a special daily rate of US$ 25++(excludes petrol).
Additional Notes
Families
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus - and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.Villa Pushpapuri's games room makes it a great destination for families with older children, who will really enjoy hanging out here, with a pool table, dart board and large TV to keep them amused. The purple and orange bedrooms make a great family or kids' base too. Guests with toddlers will need to be vigilant, however, due to the villa's river-and-beachside location and numerous ponds and water features. For expert swimmers there are boogie boards and a surf right on the doorstep.
The team of friendly staff at Villa Pushpapuri will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).
Meals can be customised to suit children's taste buds ? just talk through your requirements and schedules with the villa manager or chefs and they will take care of the rest.
Don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids' equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we don't have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, highchair, car seat and games) we can hire on your behalf
Dining
Villa Pushpapuri's chefs are at your service to prepare daily breakfast, lunch and dinner. The villa offers an extensive suggestion menu of delicious home-style meals featuring Asian and international dishes to cater to all tastes, with an excellent selection of vegetarian and children's options. The chefs are also more than happy to tailor meals to accommodate any special dietary requirements. A stay is not complete without sampling the pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf), satay ayam (chicken satay on bamboo skewers) or pisang goreng (fried banana) with ice cream.
Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price plus a handling fee which is subject to service charge and government tax. Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance, and the staff will do the shopping and keep the receipts for reference. To make the most of the kitchen and give staff time to shop, it is a good idea to plan meals with the staff the evening before.
Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage? Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply). Here's a sample of what's on the menu:Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage by the pool. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.
Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.
Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.
Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
Wedding
The sheer spaciousness of both the villa and grounds - with an abundance of outdoor areas, lawn space and the specially-built deck in front of the pool bar - coupled with the villa's gorgeous setting on the edge of the beach with the dramatic ocean views, makes Villa Pushpapuri an ideal venue for romantic weddings and other special celebrations. We can recommend expert event organisers, florists, decorators and caterers so you can focus on relaxing and celebrating with your guests.
