Overview

If you crave space, peace and privacy then indulge yourself at Villa Samadhana. Named after the ancient Sanskrit word for 'inner peace', this five-bedroom villa has been designed to encourage guests to relax, unwind and dissolve the stresses of everyday life in a beautiful tropical setting on Bali's south-east coast.

A creation of renowned Malaysian architect, Cheong Yew Kuan (Aman Resorts, Como Shambala) and professional landscaper Trevor Hilliar, this unique property draws on contemporary and traditional influences to deliver a comfortable and stylish home respectful of its natural and cultural surrounds.

Resting on an impressive 7,400 square metres in the sleepy seaside village of Ketewel, guests are privileged to an enormous amount of space. Vast rolling lawns encircle the villa with lavish gardens and water features adding to the sense of grandeur. A stunning 25-metre infinity pool with adjoining entertainment pavilion offers ocean views, as does the massive master bedroom.

Large open-air living spaces with high vaulted ceilings enable guests to freely enjoy the balmy Balinese climate, inhale the fragrant smells of the garden and marvel at the tiny birds and water hens that twitter and flutter throughout the grounds. Thai silk furnishings and a collection of Asian antiques reflect the owner's exquisite taste and style that has gone into making each room special and unique.

A standout feature of this home is the spacious restaurant-grade kitchen with its gleaming black granite worktops where the experienced chef will happily prepare meals to tantalise your taste-buds. With a team of dedicated staff, including a private butler, the villa consistently delivers five-star service, whether providing cocktails by the pool or arranging deluxe in-house spa treatments.

This appealing combination of space, style, service, peace and privacy makes Villa Samadhana the idyllic setting for a wedding, party or special celebration, as well as a blissful retreat for families, couples and groups of friends.

Accommodation

Upon entering Villa Samadhana's traditional Balinese gateway, the grandeur of this magnificent property is immediately apparent. From here, a wooden bridge traverses a large lotus pond overlooking the manicured sprawling lawns that extend all the way up to the main house.

To the left of the lotus pond rests a self-contained two-bedroom guesthouse with lounge and equipped kitchen. The principal residence, located to the rear of the property, features a master suite with ocean views, TV lounge, kitchen, two guest rooms and a large open living and dining pavilion that looks out onto the rolling lawns.

A separate entertainment pavilion with an outdoor dining terrace sits next to the 25-metre pool, offering great views of the ocean across the neighbouring rice fields.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Master Suite

The impressive air-conditioned master suite is housed in its own pavilion separated from the living and dining area and the kitchen by fish ponds and frangipani trees garlanded with orchids. Stepping stones lead to a set of carved wooden doors that open to present a welcoming Buddha statue and private Palimanan stone terrace.

Glass doors reveal the suite's TV lounge furnished with two grey-silk sofas and floor cushions for watching movies on the large flat-screen satellite TV with DVD player. Adjacent to the lounge, a small reading room enclosed by glass appears to float above a fishpond, offering glimpses of the swimming pool through an opening in the surrounding coral-limestone wall.

The bedroom itself, with its vaulted ceiling, dark teak floors, king-size bed and glass sliding doors, opens onto a private deck overlooking lawns dotted with coconut palms, and through to the crashing waves in the distance. A huge dressing area divides the bedroom from the semi-open ensuite bathroom featuring a large rectangular terrazzo bathtub, his and her vanities and walk-in rain shower. White shutters open onto a private garden bathroom with an outdoor shower encircled by six stone pillars and soft maiden-hair ferns.

Guest rooms 1 & 2

The brightly decorated air-conditioned guest rooms, located in a separate structure adjacent to the dining area, have been designed for children but can easily accommodate adults. One of the rooms has a queen-size bed with large flat-screen satellite TV and DVD player, while the other has twin beds and a small outdoor balcony surrounded by a lily pond.  A corridor with built-in wardrobes connects the two rooms as well as providing access to the shared bathroom. Featuring grey slate walls and floors, with an indoor terrazzo bathtub and walk-in shower, the bathroom also has an outdoor shower with a cascading water-wall feature. Both rooms open onto a shared wooden deck with a daybed for relaxing.

Guest house rooms 1 & 2

Fifty metres from the main house rests Villa Samadhana's two-bedroom guesthouse with its traditional alang-alang roof. Light and airy with cream walls and teak floors, both air-conditioned rooms feature queen-sized beds with batik throws, garden bathrooms with indoor shower and glass sliding doors that open onto a wooden deck bordering the immaculately manicured lawns. One of the bedrooms has a window seat to soak up the sun while the other has a daybed for those inclined to take an afternoon nap. Between the two bedrooms is a small living area with a self-contained kitchen and breakfast bar with bar stools.

Living & Dining Areas

Living and dining pavilion

Guests are officially welcomed to Villa Samadhana in the large open-sided living and dining pavilion which is cooled by ceiling fans hanging from high vaulted ceilings above polished terrazzo floors. Making the most of its incredible surroundings this area overlooks the rolling lawns and striking silver-blue Madagascan palm trees.

The living area features low white-cushioned sofas, two wooden daybeds tastefully decorated with red silk cushions and a scattering of interesting artefacts.  The dining area presents a solid teak table (seats 12) and is perfect for a Balinese banquet.

TV lounge

To the rear of the living pavilion is the air-conditioned TV lounge which features a large flat-screen satellite TV, DVD player and surround-sound system (which also feeds the adjoining living and dining area). For those that would rather chill out and read a book, the room opens onto a lovely timber deck overlooking a fish pond.

Kitchen

One of the most important rooms in the house ? the kitchen ? sits behind the TV lounge. The kitchen is also accessed by a long, brushed-concrete promenade displaying a fine collection of Asian antiquities. Featuring polished granite work tops, commercial stove, wok burner and lots of cupboard space it is perhaps one of the biggest private kitchens on the island. The kitchen also opens onto a timber deck and fish pond that is home to three auspicious Arowana fish.

Entertainment pavilion

The enormous entertainment pavilion, one level down from the living and dining area and presenting ocean views, is the ultimate poolside retreat. With an alang-alang thatched roof and Palimanan stone floor, this room is cooled by ceiling fans and the natural sea breeze. The pavilion includes a billiard table, TV, DVD and stereo system, sofa, polished concrete bar with bar stools and washroom. The rear wall of the bar (including the fridge and water cooler) is painted with a batik motif to match the cushions on the lounge suite, adding a sense of fun and vibrancy.

Outdoor living

A highlight of Villa Samadhana is the landscaped garden. Designed by one of Bali's best landscape architects, Trevor Hilliar, the rolling manicured lawns, running water features, exotic trees, palms and flowering plants complement the villa beautifully to give it its unique sense of space.

The lawn area directly below the living and dining pavilion is larger than a football field and is a great area for the kids to run around in, or to host a wedding party. Not only do children love this space; so do the native birds, lizards and butterflies.

Keen swimmers will relish the 25-metre infinity pool with its spectacular ocean views, and there's a shallow section for children and those who would rather just lie back and relax. The poolside deck, furnished with sunloungers and a white-curtained daybed provides the perfect setting to laze the days away. For dinner parties under the stars ask Gede, the villa manager, to set up the stone table (seats 14) on the outdoor terrace, which also features a large standing menhir stone.

Location

Villa Samadhana is located in the sleepy seaside village of Ketewel, 13 kilometres from Sanur along Bali's south-east coast. Hidden behind coral-limestone walls a few hundred metres from the glistening black shores of Pabean Beach, the villa offers ocean views from the pool area and master bedroom, as well as glimpses of Mount Agung in the distance.

Surrounded by rice fields, tobacco plantations, papaya, banana and coconut groves this is still a very traditional area untouched by tourism, however access to the bypass means it is only a ten-minute drive to Sukawati's art and craft market, fifteen minutes to the cafés and restaurants of Sanur and 30 minutes to the cultural capital of Ubud.

Ketewel itself is the birthplace of the celebrated Legong Bededari Dance, and the neighbouring village of Saba produced the finest Legong dancers on the island. Pabean was once a small port through which oriental traders brought their products; at low tide you can still see the structure of the old harbour, and a Chinese cemetery is located nearby. Balinese Hindu purification ceremonies are held beside the ocean at the sacred Pura Segara sea temple, and the glistening black sandy stretch of coastline is popular with surfers and beachcombers, but swirling currents and a lack of lifeguards make it unsuitable for swimming.

Activities

Gede, Villa Samadhana's manager, has a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask other staff about the local area. Invariably some of them will live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.

  • If you've always dreamt of galloping along the beach at sunset, now's your chance. Saba Bay stables, can arrange horse riding trails along the black sands and crashing waves at nearby Saba Beach, passing bamboo and alang-alang plantations and local temples.
  • You're just a 20-minute drive from the historical village of Sanur, Bali's original tourist enclave. Its lovely broad expanse of golden sands sheltered by a reef makes this for the perfect spot for safe swimming. Make the most of the diverse array of water sports available and some excellent eating places along the five-kilometre seafront promenade.
  • Don't miss a trip up to Bali's cultural and artistic hub, Ubud, a 25-minute scenic drive. This is the best place to catch traditional Balinese dance performances ? especially at the town's Royal Palace, magically illuminated at night. Ubud has also recently evolved as an upmarket destination, boasting cutting-edge restaurants like Mozaic and world-class spas such as award-winning Como Shambhala.
  • You can purchase plenty of arts, crafts and souvenirs in Ubud, but why not get them at source, at Ubud's outlying traditional artisan villages? There's wider options at great value to be found at Celuk, famous for silverware, Batubulan for stone carvings, Mas for wood carvings and Sukawati, for its arts and crafts market ? all just 10- to 20-minutes' drive away.
  • Just off the mainland are the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida ? both famous for their scuba diving and snorkelling, with excellent dive sites and rich marine life. Boat trips from Sanur or Padangbai can easily be arranged. Further along the east coast, Amed and Tulamben offer isolated reefs ? the latter, also has shipwreck diving.
  • Bali Safari & Marine Park (7km) offers a fun family day out. Home to hundreds of amazing animals representing more than 50 species, it presents a tram ride through the animal enclosures, a marine aquarium, a theatre, animal educational and entertainment shows, as well as the Fun Zone where visitors can get wet and wild in the Waterpark or embark on a Jungle Cruise.
  • Fashionistas and shop-a-holics should drive over to the west coast ? around 45 minutes away ? where you'll find Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, indulge in globally-inspired gourmet restaurants, stylish boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars ? including the much hyped Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.
  • The stretch of beach between Sanur and Ketewel is well known as a surfer's heaven (especially from November to May, when the winds turn offshore on this side of the island), but beginners should beware of strong, swirling currents. Good breaks can be found at Keramas, Ketewel and Cucukan.
  • Pulau Dive Charters offers luxury boat charters around the beautiful islands and waters surrounding Bali. They specialise in private fishing, surfing and diving charters and also offer unique personalised day trips to Nusa Lembongan. Perfect for a family day out on the water or with a group of friends.

Services included

Exclusive use of the whole villa and listed services and facilities, including full-time manager, private chef, butler, swimming pool, unlimited internet access, and 8 hour car and driver at a special daily rate of USD 25++ (excludes petrol).

Additional Notes

Children
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real
plus ? and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Villa Samadhana is a great villa for families, however toddlers will need to be carefully supervised around the fish ponds and water features. Kids will love the wide open spaces just perfect for a game of football. The enormous 25-metre swimming pool features a special shallow section for the little ones and a range of pool toys. If it happens to be a rainy day don't despair, the villa is well equipped with children's DVDs and games and the entertainment pavilion provides plenty of space for kids to play.

The team of friendly staff at Villa Samadhana will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Banana pancakes by the pool for breakfast? Toasted sandwiches in the TV lounge for lunch? No problem. The chef can customise all meals to suit children's taste buds.

Don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids' equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we don't have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, and highchair) we can hire on your behalf

Dining
Villa Samadhana features a huge restaurant-grade kitchen where the villa's private chef and his assistant, are at your service to prepare daily breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The villa offers an extensive suggestion menu of delicious home-style meals featuring Asian and international dishes to cater to all tastes, with an excellent selection of vegetarian and children's options. The kitchen is also more than happy to tailor meals to accommodate any special dietary requirements.

A stay is not complete without sampling pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf), satay ayam (chicken satay on bamboo skewers) or pisang goreng (fried banana) with ice cream. And being so close to the ocean, fresh seafood is easy to source ? delicious cooked up by the chef on the poolside barbecue.

Food and beverages are charged at cost price plus a 20% handling fee which is subject to service charge and government tax. Guests will be requested to provide a float for groceries in advance and staff will shop and keep receipts for reference.

Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage? Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of your own villa by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply). Here's a sample of what's on the menu:

Massage
Spoil yourself and release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage by the pool or on the master suite's private deck. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure

Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.

Weddings
Lavish grounds and extensive facilities make Villa Samadhana the ideal tropical setting for weddings and special celebrations. Whether it's an open air event under the stars amongst the perfectly manicured lawns framed by mature trees and exotic flowers or a more intimate affair under the thatched entertainment pavilion overlooking the pool lit with lanterns, we will happily assist in planning your special occasion.

We can recommend expert event organisers, florists, decorators and caterers so you can focus on relaxing and celebrating with your guests.
