Accommodation

Welcome to Des Indes Villas  an exceptional pair of fully staffed luxury villas set within the ultra-exclusive gated Laksmana Estate in Seminyak's most sought-after locale, moments from Petitenget Beach.

Named after Holland's legendary Hotel Des Indes from the Dutch East Indies era, each heritage-meets-contemporary-chic villa comprises a series of individual living and sleeping pavilions set in tropical gardens with swimming pools, balés, sun decks and koi ponds.

At the heart of the four-bedroom Des Indes Villa I is a centuries-old teak joglo, once the residence of a Javanese aristocrat and reassembled in Bali. Today, with its elaborately sculpted pillars and intricately carved panels, this heritage building believed to be the best preserved joglo on the island , commands centre-stage as an open-sided, open-plan living space circled by a 21-metre lagoon-style swimming pool and ornamental koi pond.

In both villas, the bedroom suites are impeccably proportioned, with floors of polished teakwood and Palimanan stone under vaulted, teak ceilings. An eclectic collection of colonial-style furniture, prized antiques, precious Asian ceramics and artefacts, oriental rugs and art books adorn every room. Expect more contemporary luxuries too  top-range King Koil mattresses, crisp cotton bed linen, large TVs with satellite channels in every bedroom, and statement bathtubs in marble-lined bathrooms.

Out of sight but always on hand are the villa butlers, ready to meet your every whim ? whether an espresso served on your bedroom veranda, an ice-cold Bintang by the pool, silver service afternoon tea in the joglo or living pavilion.

Each day is magical here. Start with an energy-boosting tropical breakfast then pick up one of the many books lying around, and retreat to an antique daybed or poolside balé. Take a siesta on a sun lounger then cool off in the pool. Stroll to Ku De Ta for sunset cocktails, then return home for a gourmet candle-lit dine created by your accomplished chef. Finally, retreat to the air-conditioned comfort of your spacious bedroom, sink into a petal-strewn bathtub and finally retire to your four-poster bed. Repeat the next day!

With warm heartfelt service, wonderful surroundings, and a stellar beach-in-five Seminyak location, Des Indes Villas are perfect for five-star-seeking, fun-loving families and friends.

Living & Dining Areas

At the heart of Villa Des Indes I is the magnificent living pavilion ? a centuries-old elaborately carved teakwood joglo, once the home of a Javanese aristocrat and believed to be the best preserved in Bali. Within this large open-sided living space are separate zones: a dining area with table for eight, and three different seating areas where colonial-style cane and rattan sofas and planters chairs cluster around coffee tables laden with books on culture and art. Oriental carpets, lacquer ware drums and stone statues are among the myriad decorative pieces embellishing this glorious space.

In a separate pavilion is the guest bar and butler?s pantry, with antique masks lining one wall, an old cabinet brimming with spirits, and bar chairs pulled up at the counter ready for sunset cocktails. Along a corridor is the well-equipped kitchen ? the chef?s domain, though guests are welcome to use it if so inclined.

Further living spaces are found within the sleeping pavilions: an air-conditioned den/library in the master pavilions, and verandas off the guest rooms provide private corners for repose away from the crowd.

Within the garden is a cushioned balé that invites lengthy afternoon siestas. Even within the lagoon pool, there are places to sit, semi-submerged with a cocktail or good book.

Activities

Des Indes Villas' manager has a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Chat to the staff too; many have been attached to the villa for some time and are a great source of insider information. In the meantime, here's a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.

  • Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Seminyak, Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, chic boutiques. There is a wide choice of fine dining, mid range, and cheap 'n cheerful restaurants in Seminyak too: fine dining venues include Sarong, the famous Ku Dé Ta, Mama San, La Lucciola, Petitenget, Merah Putih, Sardine and Métis.
  • It's possible to walk the sands of Seminyak's Petitenget Beach all the way to Kuta in the south, or north to Canggu. The beach is more popular with locals than tourists (not safe for swimming in most sections), but is a great spot for building sandcastles or to watch the sunset as you sip a cocktail from one of the many beachside bars.
  • A nice sunset alternative is to head down to Echo Beach (9km) where a number of cafes offer good sunset views and cold beer. Note that the beach here is dark sand and the waters are better suited to surfing, having a pronounced swell and rip, rather than children's swimming. Hotel Tugu, a very stylish and eclectic boutique hotel a few minutes further down the coast is also a good sunset spot, or try Old Man's, a more casual café across the road for alfresco all day dining
  • Des Indes I is close to the famous temple at Tanah Lot (18 km), although in peak season a few too many tourists may transform a sunset visit into more of a heaving photo opportunity than a moving experience. Visiting early in the morning (8-9am) provides a better idea of the power of the location and the chance to see it undisturbed apart from perhaps an offering ceremony.
  • Drive westwards to explore the charming Tabanan regency, revealing terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities. Or head north to explore the volcanic lakes near the mountain town of Bedugul, including Lake Bratan with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu ? one of Bali?s most important temples.
  • The most exclusive Bali trekking tour promises breath-taking vistas and heart-warming encounters while supporting sustainable social change in the once-forgotten villages of Muntigunung. Elite Havens is a proud partner of Muntigunung Community Social Enterprise.
  • Bali Treetop Adventure Park is near the town of Bedugal in northern central Bali (next to Lake Bratan). Five adventure circuits, with heights ranging from two to 20 metres, challenge all level and ages on suspended bridges, spider nets, Tarzan jumps and 12 flying foxes.
  • Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.

Services included

Villa manager; assistant manager; chef; cook; butlers/housekeeping; garden and pool staff; maintenance; security (night-time only at villa, 24-hour for estate).

Additional Notes

Families
Villa holidays are an excellent option for families, who can enjoy the villas? private facilities with the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can play independently and safely, without you having to worry about them disturbing other guests, is a real plus  ? and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Both Des Indes Villa I and Des Indes Villa II are suitable for a large family or a couple of families holidaying together, thanks to the configuration of bedrooms and multiple private spaces across different pavilions within the gardens. For guests travelling with a crowd, the villas ? which are a two-minute walk away from each other in the same estate ? can be booked together, providing a total of nine bedrooms and three swimming pools.

Those with toddlers will need to be vigilant, however, due to the unfenced swimming pools and ponds (though it is easy to keep an eye on children from the comfort of the living areas.

The staff will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although the equipped kitchens in each villa allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will be happy to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest.

Don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids? equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we don?t have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, highchair, car seat and games) we can hire on your behalf (click here to see list of available hire items).

And when the excitement of exploring the villa starts to wear off, check out our Things to do page ? there?s plenty in the area to keep all the family amused throughout your holiday.

Dining
Do take advantage of the skills of Des Indes Villas? competent chef who is on hand to prepare daily breakfast (included in the rate), as well as lunch and dinner on request.  Guests may choose from a reasonably priced menu of home-style Indonesian, Asian and Western dishes catering to all tastes, everything from spaghetti carbonara to spicy beef rendang.

They can also arrange a barbecue of imported meats and fresh-from-the-sea fish. If guests have specific requests, the chef is more than happy to cook off-menu dishes as well as tailor meals to accommodate any special dietary requirements.  They may also prepare gourmet meals for up to 25 guests should you wish to host a dinner party while in residence.  (Off-menu groceries and beverages will be charged at cost plus 10.5% tax and 5% service.)

Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage?  Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you!  We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of your villa by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply).  Here's a sample of what?s on the menu:

Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage.  Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet corresponding to every part of the body.  Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth.  A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve.  Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.

Transport
The villa's central Seminyak location places many attractions within easy walking distance. If transport is required, the villa staff will happily call one of the island's safe and reasonably priced metered taxis, or organise the hire of a car and driver for day trips further afield.

Well-suited for multi-generation families or groups of friends who appreciate both social space and privacy, they can also be booked together(Des Indes I and II ) for larger groups of more than 18 guests.
