Overview

With a prime location in Seminyak's prestigious Oberoi enclave, the six-bedroom Villa Kinara is perfectly positioned for Bali's best-known restaurants, bars and boutiques as well as the island's famed sunset beaches. Unlike many Seminyak villas, Villa Kinara offers guests a luxurious sense of space as well as lavish comfort and privacy.

Delightfully original, the villa's architectural design draws on the Indonesian archipelago's rich heritage and abundance of natural materials. Paying heed to traditional Balinese home layouts, Villa Kinara's accommodation is spread over three pavilions, with alang-alang (thatch) roofing and ironwood shingles. In a contemporary interpretation of the old timber joglo and limasan houses of Java, teakwood is richly incorporated throughout the villa's design, showcasing supreme craftsmanship and creating a depth of character typical of Balinese style. The vast living space is defined by towering wooden pillars created from trees selected by the owner's architect; teak-embellished ceilings, and Sulawesi floors in the bedroom suites. The Dutch-inspired window and door shutters are another interesting feature as is the incorporation of other natural materials including Palimanan stone, Yogyakarta lavastone, hand-crafted terrazzo, rattan, bamboo and coconut shell.

In keeping with the enviro-architectural theme, the chic furniture, including the dining table (a magnificent slab of teak and a talking point in itself), have been designed exclusively for Villa Kinara. Sitting effortlessly among these traditional materials are all the comforts of convenient 21st Century living: large flat-screen TVs and home entertainment systems, WiFi throughout, and two superbly equipped kitchens.

Two other important Balinese traditions share the limelight with the beautiful design of Villa Kinara. Community spirit abounds in the many social gathering spaces scattered throughout the villa, and hospitality from the heart is offered by a team of charming, well-trained, willing staff who are dedicated to creating a holiday haven for their guests.

Villa Kinara is the perfect residence for multiple families or groups of friends. Parties exceeding 12 people have the opportunity to take over the neighbouring, mirror image four-bedroom Villa Kinare, providing a total of ten bedrooms.

Accommodation

Set behind high walls topped with decorative teakwood panels, Villa Kinara comprises a pair of interconnected double-storey pavilions facing a third pavilion across the swimming pool and garden, linked on both levels by a colonnaded walkway. The huge living and entertaining area occupies the entire ground level of the inter-connected pavilions. From here, an open staircase leads to the media room (which doubles as a guest bedroom) and onto a huge furnished terrace where sliding doors open onto two more guest bedrooms. A roof-garden walkway links to the facing pavilion which houses the master bedroom suite on the second level and two further guest bedrooms on the garden level.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Villa Kinara's bedrooms are particularly spacious with ensuite bathrooms, wide, covered terraces, plentiful wardrobe space, and generous indoor and outdoor seating areas. Polished teakwood flooring, designer furniture, fascinating artifacts and thoughtful lighting create delightfully individual interiors, and plush American Pillo beds dressed with 100% cotton bed linen ensure a good night's sleep. The rooms are individually air-conditioned but those who prefer to embrace the tropical climate can opt to turn on the ceiling fans and open the shutters instead.

Master bedroom

The master bedroom suite is palatial, occupying the entire top floor of the alang-alang pavilion. Running its full length and overlooking the pool and garden is a massive terrace of wide-planked teakwood, with a large (1.10m x 2.3m) cushion-covered daybed and four chairs of burnt orange plaited leather grouped around a coffee table. On one side of the king-size bed is a taupe upholstered sofa and ottoman with mirror panel above; on the other side is an elegant reading chair and another ottoman. Facing the bed and flanked by shuttered windows and doors is a media console with 40inch TV and home entertainment system. A red lacquered desk and piebald cowhide chair sit alongside floating shelves that house an array of books and decorative pieces.

A mirrored door opens onto a large dressing room and a second door leads to the ensuite bathroom. This is another enormous space with floors and walls of terrazzo, huge mirrors and a vanity counter with double basins. Beyond, is a breezy semi-open area with a Knief bathtub set before potted palms and a large walk-in, wood-lined section with his ?n' hers rain showers.

Alang-alang pavilion guest bedrooms

Below the master bedroom suite are two guest bedrooms. Slightly smaller than the others, yet still larger than many a multi-starred hotel room, they are each well furnished with king bed, chaise longue, upholstered seating, writing desk, a wall of wardrobes and sliding doors opening onto a huge shared terrazzo terrace furnished with a generous daybed, just steps from the well-tended garden. The ensuite terrazzo bathrooms feature walk-in showers with windows onto foliage.

Main pavilion guest bedrooms

Occupying the second level of the main pavilion are two further guest suites ? spacious, light-filled rooms equipped with reading chair and footstool, large desk and chair, sofa, blanket chest, and king size bed (one of which can be separated into twin beds). The ensuite bathrooms are light and airy with single basin, walk-in rain shower and, in one, a bathtub surrounded by duckboard and pebbles. Accessed by a staircase from the living area, these bedrooms open onto a terrazzo terrace with a distinctive ironwood shingle roof offering yet more space to relax upon seats of chocolate and brick red plaited leather.

Small pavilion bedroom/media room

Three steps down from the terrazzo terrace, with a daybed outside its glazed doors, sits the sixth bedroom ? a beautiful room with particularly rich teakwood patterned floors that also doubles as a media room. Before a wall of bookshelves, is a king bed that can be converted to twin beds. A 3m suedette sofa faces a 52inch flat-screen TV and home entertainment system. Adjacent is an ensuite shower room.

Living & Dining Areas

Indoor living

The vast open-sided and open-plan living area that spreads across the garden level of two pavilions forms the social hub of Villa Kinara. This is a spectacular space for relaxing and entertaining, defined by soaring teakwood columns and skillfully divided into separate activity areas, with the swimming pool edging almost into the room. On one side, conversation is sure to flow with the configuration of oversized sofas arranged around a huge coffee table, set before a bar with stools, drinks fridge and glass jars full of snacks. With an equally social focus, is the full-size billiard table which commands centre-stage. Opposite, alongside the garden terrace, comfortable sofas and armchairs are grouped around a 46inch flat-screen satellite TV and home entertainment system.

The dining area is equally generous, with an enormous slab of teakwood fashioned into a statement dining table seating 12 people, with room to spare. Behind an island buffet of black granite, is the guest kitchen, which is well equipped with American-style fridge, hob, oven, microwave and an extensive collection of plates and utensils housed in handsome wooden cupboards. A door from here leads to the ?back of house' section, with separate staff kitchen allowing for extra guest privacy whilst the resident chef is preparing meals.

Outdoor living

Villa Kinara offers a wide range of outdoor living areas in keeping with the same highly social space planning that marks its interiors. The 14m swimming pool, with water-feature on the boundary wall and wide shallow steps leading towards the living area, is the perfect spot to cool off, while an ironwood deck with stylish sun loungers shaded by a pair of parasols provides an ideal setting for alfresco siestas or refreshing sundowners.

The many terraces and decks at both levels of all three pavilions provide opportunities for private relaxation while enjoying views of the beautifully landscaped garden, with its old Cambodia frangipani, sacred Pohon Pile tree and Sawit date palms imported from Java.

Activities

The villa manager is happy to share a wealth of information about nearby places of interest, and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area to gain interesting insights into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within easy reach of the villa.

  • Shop 'til you drop! In Seminyak and neighbouring Kerobokan you can rummage for treasures through cluttered little stores and dark junkshops crammed to the ceiling with curios and ?made-to-order' antiques, derive inspiration from classy homeware shops, or wander through huge furniture warehouses. In Jalan Laksmana (Eat Street) you can shop between courses!  Boutiques include Paul Ropp, Biasa, Magali Pascal, Anouck, Lily Jean, Bamboo Blond, Dinda Rella, Innuendo, Religion, Body & Soul, Buddha Wear, M. Harcourt, Pura Vida, and Uma & Leopold to name but a few. Kids fashion stores include Kidsagogo and Kiki's Closet.  For art lovers, galleries worth visiting in Seminyak include Randelli Gallery, Biasa and Kendra.
  • It's possible to walk the grey sands of Seminyak's Petitenget beach all the way to Kuta in the south, or north to Canggu.  The beach is more popular with locals than tourists (not safe for swimming in most sections), but is a great spot for building sandcastles or to watch the sunset as you sip a cocktail from one of the many beachside bars.
  • There are several surf schools in Bali, mainly based in and around Kuta and Legian, where young and old(er) can learn to surf or brush up on their skills.
  • Learn the secrets of Balinese spices and cuisine during a cookery class at Sate Bali Restaurant on Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak. At the end of the three hour course sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labours.
  • Make a pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali's biggest tourist magnets. Perched high on a craggy, wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is best savoured at sunset. Be sure to receive a blessing from the Hindu Priests (and watch out for the monkeys, who are very adept at helping themselves to anything from snacks to sunglasses and even cameras!)
  • If you've always dreamed of galloping along a beach or riding through villages bordered by rice fields, now's your chance. Umalas Stables in Kerobokan or Bali Horse Adventure and Kuda P Stables (both in Pererenan) can arrange horse riding tours, as well as children's riding lessons and horse-drawn carriage outings.
  • Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 water slides (including The Climax with its 360 degree loop) to entertain the young and the young at heart. A great family day out, but go early to beat the crowds.
  • Play a round at the unbelievably scenic Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields and just down from Tanah Lot sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
  • Get up to some monkey business at Bali Treetop Adventure Park (next to Lake Bratan in central Bali). Five adventure circuits, with heights ranging from two to 20m, challenge all level and ages on suspended bridges, spider nets, Tarzan jumps and 12 flying foxes.
  • In-villa beauty and massage treatments carried out by professional therapists can normally be arranged with ease, but if you'd prefer to visit one of Seminyak's spas, we recommend; Bodyworks (quality treatments at very reasonable prices ? a favourite with Bali's expats),  Callego (a casual massage centre with a small restaurant attached),  Chill (super reflexology treatments ? great for jetlag), Prana Spa for Ayurvedic treatments.
  • Pulau Dive Chartersoffers luxury boat charters around the beautiful islands and waters surrounding Bali. They specialise in private fishing, surfing and diving charters and also offer unique personalised day trips to Nusa Lembongan. Perfect for a family day out on the water or with a group of friends.

Services included

Additional Notes

Families
The family-friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus ? and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Villa Kinara is ideal for families. Younger children can be easily supervised in the pool as it is visible from all areas of the open-plan living room, and will enjoy watching TV in the living area or the second floor media room. Older kids will gravitate to the billiard table, appreciate the size and privacy of the bedrooms, and revel in the chance to wander out safely to the beach, shops and nightlife of Seminyak.

Our friendly staff will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost). Although equipped kitchens allow you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you ? just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or cook and they will take care of the rest.

Neither do you have to worry about packing all that cumbersome extra equipment when you stay at Villa Kinara as we can provide you with all the essentials. We have a cot and high chair, and what we don't have in-house, we can generally hire in for a small fee (click here to see list of available hire items). Just talk through your requirements with us when you make your reservation and we'll make sure it's all ready and waiting for your arrival.

And when the excitement of exploring the villa starts to wear off, check out our Things to Do page; there's plenty in Bali to keep kids of all ages amused throughout the holiday.

Dining
Bali is fast becoming a focus for culinary pursuits and epicurean passions. With Villa Kinara's central location, guests are more than spoilt for choice. Ku Dé Ta is a leisurely five-minute stroll away with internationally acclaimed restaurants such as Sardine, Sarong and Nutmegs at Hu'u also nearby. Eateries serving cuisine from all around the world have earned nearby Jalan Laksmana the label ?Eat Street' and with its many gastronomic delights at your doorstep, for many guests, eating out is the preferred option.

Guests who wish to enjoy home cooking in the privacy of Villa Kinara will appreciate the resident full time chef who will happily prepare a wide range of Balinese, Asian and international dishes.

Food and beverage charges

All provisions can be purchased by the housekeepers and charged to guests at cost price and shopping receipts will be provided either daily or at the end of the stay - as preferred.  It is also requested that the staff be given a 'float' to cover the grocery shopping.

Wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks are also available on request and will be charged for at the end of your stay.

Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage? Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of Villa Kinara ? by the pool, on the terrace or in the cool of the bedroom ? by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply). Here's a sample of what's on the menu:

Balinese massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
