Overview
For a central-Seminyak property, Villa Shambala is exceptionally
spacious, amazingly peaceful and totally charming. Set within a private
walled garden, Shambala effortlessly fuses old and new, borrowing its
eclectic style from the intricately carved traditional wooden joglo
houses of Java, and blending it with today's requisite comforts.
This
single-storey villa comprises a main pavilion and a three-bedroomed
guesthouse, set at opposite ends of a luxurious 19-metre swimming pool.
The open-plan design of the main building allows natural light to flood
into the space and accentuates the honey-coloured detail of the recycled
teakwood that is the signature feature of Shambala. An ornate
chandelier hangs from the soaring rafters of the century-old roof in the
comfortable and stylishly furnished living room, which is adjoined by
an elegant dining area where a table for ten makes the perfect setting
for a dinner party. To the rear of the dining space is a chic,
custom-designed kitchen incorporating an island workstation and
breakfast bar.
Villa Shambala's master suite features an
exquisitely carved joglo canopy above the bed and a huge ensuite garden
bathroom. The master and second bedroom sit beyond the living areas, to
the rear of the villa, and both overlook a peaceful water feature
complete with large stone Buddha and tranquil lily pond. The three
guesthouse bedrooms, all ensuite, are arranged around a second TV room,
brightly decorated and perfect for children. Villa Shambala features a
fully equipped media room complete with large screen projector, surround
sound system, DVD and satellite TV with an extensive library of DVDs,
CDs and books for guests' enjoyment. WiFi is also available throughout
the villa.
Leading away from the main building, past circular
outdoor lounge seating under a shady 'sail' canopy, is a double spa room
where guests can enjoy massage and Ayurvedic treatments administered by
skilled therapists.
Guests at Villa Shambala are served by a
wonderful team of staff including a house manager, private chef,
housekeepers, butler, gardeners and security guards, all dedicated to
ensuring that you have the perfect holiday.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms
Master suite
The regal master suite features an exquisite hand-carved teak canopy above its queen bed. Flowing white net encloses both the bed and ottoman at its foot creating the effect of a 'room within a room'. Warmly decorated in natural materials, this luxurious bedroom's wooden furnishings are complimented by exotic artefacts from around the world and accentuated with rich tones of purple and cream, inviting lazy mornings and romantic nights. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors can be opened onto the lily pond and tranquil water feature for relaxing, breezy afternoons. The master suite's spacious bathroom features a semi-sunken stone tub and a rain shower.
Guest bedrooms
Villa Shambala's four air-conditioned guest bedrooms are all luxuriously appointed with queen-size beds, courtyard bathrooms, plush interiors and natural finishings of wood, stone and glass. The first guest bedroom is situated in the main pavilion, across the lily pond from the master suite. This lovely room is furnished with a four-poster bed and plush cushions and linens. The large outdoor ensuite features a double slate-coloured stone bathtub, twin washbasins with 'Hollywood lighting' lining the mirror and a tropical rain shower. The three comfortable guest pavilion bedrooms all face onto a central TV room and are ideal for children or extended family groups as the beds can also be configured as twins.
Living & Dining Areas
The imposing antique Javanese joglo that forms the heart of Villa Shambala's comfortable living room evokes an authentic sense of place. Below the soaring roof is a huge U-shaped couch set around a coffee table, while an ornate crystal chandelier adds an elegant decorative element and a small army of wooden statues stand in attendance. Glass folding doors open widely to admit a cooling breeze and the peaceful sound of trickling water emanates throughout the pavilion. The dining room adjoining the living area is furnished with a solid wood table and ten chairs crafted in woven bamboo. To the rear of the dining area is a large, modern, well-equipped kitchen, designed to be as pleasing to holiday cooks as it is to guests who would prefer to take a back seat at the breakfast bar and watch the villa's private chef do the work.
The air-conditioned TV lounge is fitted with sofas facing a wall unit filled with books, games and a massive digitally projected screen and DVD player with surround-sound. The guest pavilion features a second media room with a 42-inch TV and DVD player.
Flanking the 19-metre swimming pool is a wide, manicured lawn lined with tropical palms and fragrant frangipanis, and furnished with sun loungers and a shady balé for the ultimate in relaxation. Opposite the pool is Villa Shambala's air-conditioned spa therapy room with two massage beds for in-house treatments, which can be easily arranged by the villa manager. On a shade-dappled deck to one side of the living pavilion is a large circular seating area ? perfect for evening cocktails or a relaxing afternoon read. On the other side is a beautifully designed open-sided dining area complete with massive twenty-seat table and barbecue.

Activities
The villa manager will typically have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Invariably some of them will live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.
In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.
- Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali's prestigious Canggu Club, fifteen minutes away, with its state-of-the-art gym, tennis and squash centre. Round off your workouts with some fine international dining, then stock up on gourmet goodies at the nearby Canggu Deli.
- Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali's best surfing beaches, only ten to fifteen minutes away. Among the string of naturally beautiful beaches, don't miss long-time surfers haunt, Echo Beach - but all are in prime position for Bali's legendary sunsets.
- On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali. Listed in the Robb Report (the World's Best of the Best), Bali's first museum-hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques. The boutique hotel's award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies.
- Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali's biggest tourist magnets. Perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is most popular at sunset, but we suggest guests go early morning to enjoy the location in peace!
- Alternatively, view Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
- Fashionistas and shop-a-holics should hotfoot it down to Bali's most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. From Villa Shambala, guests are minutes away from stylish, global-inspired restaurants - such as Sarong and Métis, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars on Seminyak beachfront.
- Drive west to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black sand beaches dotted with fishing communities - the treasures that Bali is famed for.
- For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, head north to Mount Batukaru with its major temple and the nearby rice-fields of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage sight; or to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu - one of Bali's most important temples.
- Ubud, the cultural capital of Bali, is around an hour's cross-country drive away. An easy day trip to admire the workshops and galleries and maybe watch one of the many dance performances in the early evening, or enjoy one of the many restaurants perched over gorges or rice-fields.
- Pulau Dive Charters offers luxury boat charters around the beautiful islands and waters surrounding Bali. They specialise in private fishing, surfing and diving charters and also offer unique personalised day trips to Nusa Lembongan. Perfect for a family day out on the water or with a group of friends.
