Overview
Villa Hamsa is a beautiful four-bedroom villa on the south shore of Bali's Bukit peninsula.
Accommodation
From the private courtyard secured by heavy ironwood doors, steps
over a lotus pond bring guests into Villa Hamsa's large living pavilion,
which opens onto a shaded full-length veranda looking towards the ocean
view.
At the far end of the pool is the master bedroom suite with
cliff-edge private deck. The three guest suites occupy a lower level
under the pool, and are accessed by steps to the side of the living
pavilion leading to a semi-subterranean passageway with towering windows
looking onto a natural rock wall.
The large, light-filled living pavilion features a vaulted roof, signature screen walls of Bengkirai-wood blocks, and a wall of glass sliding doors opening onto the terrace and looking across the pool towards the master pavilion and the ocean beyond. Two large, deeply upholstered cream sofas and a pair of retro rattan chairs rest on a striking jute carpet from the Philippines, with a black marble coffee table in between.
To one side is a matt-black cabinet concealing a 42-inch TV and Sonos sound system. On the other side of the room a massive 2.2-metre marble-topped table with lazy susan turntable and ten armchairs sits under a stunning pendant light created from a circle of resin candles.
All four spacious bedrooms at Villa Hamsa feature custom-designed furniture, a soothing grey and ivory colour scheme, extensive wardrobe space and a choice of air-conditioning or overhead fan. The bathrooms continue the contemporary theme with walls of Javanese marble and smoked glass, and cream acid-washed marble floors; all feature rain showers and bathtubs.
The master bedroom suite lies between the pool and the cliff edge perched atop the guest suites block. Under the soaring Merbauwood ceiling sits a massive emperor-size four-poster bed facing the treetops of the adjoining sister Villa Soham. A sofa in the corner makes a cosy reading corner or can be converted to a kid's bed. A Sonos sound system and 32-inch LED TV on a movable platform provides alternative entertainment to the 180-degree ocean vista beyond the suite's enormous ironwood deck.
Occupying the level below the master suite and swimming pool are three spacious guest suites, each with twins convertible to king-size beds, lacquer cabinet concealing a TV and DVD player, marble-topped table and deeply cushioned banquette.
One guest bedroom has prime position overlooking the ocean, with a private ironwood deck looking down onto a courtyard garden accessed from the gym, and a wall of glass bringing the stunning view into the bathroom too.
The other mirror-image bedrooms look onto a lotus pond within a walled courtyard; in each, a statement bathtub sits on a private ironwood deck accessed by sliding doors from the bathroom.

The Sohamsa Ocean Estate gives guests the best of both worlds location-wise a private Bali cliff-top setting yet with a great choice of activities within half an hour's drive or less. Our villa manager will have a wealth of information about places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the area too; most will live nearby and can give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of local Bali life. For now, here's a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of Sohamsa Ocean Estate.
- Until recently, the white sands and warm, protected waters of Pandawa Beach were visited only by locals and seaweed farmers. A paved (toll) road cut through the cliff has recently made this beautiful beach, which lies immediately below the estate, much more accessible.
- Among other local beaches is the famous surf beach at Uluwatu. Not quite as spectacular but equally alluring are the beaches of Bingin and Padang Padang. Beautiful white sand bays with rock pools and a host of local cafés.
- Soar above the spectacular southern coastline of the Bukit Peninsula on a Paraglider. Paragliding courses and solo flying for the experienced are available as well as tandem flights in the safe hands of experienced instructors. The training centre is at Timbis Beach on the south coast of the Bukit.
- Perched on a cliff 70m above the roaring Indian ocean, Uluwatu Temple (Pura Uluwatu) is one of Bali's nine key directional temples. Facing west and with steep headlands on either side creating an unbelievably dramatic setting. Get there in good time for Sunset to watch the enthralling Kecak Ramayana & Fire Dance.
- At Jenggala Keramic in Jimbaran, visitors can browse and buy from a vast range of handcrafted ceramics and glassware. Jenggala also runs -Make and Paint a Pot- sessions where Children of all ages are encouraged to get creative.
- For golf enthusiasts, the New Kuta Golf Club (11km) features an 18-hole course overlooking the ocean.
- Both five star and local restaurants are plentiful and close by. Bulgari and Ayana resorts are among the favourites and the Rock Bar at Ayana is a must-see for sunset cocktails. Finns at Semara has a beach club for more casual dining.
- A seafood feast at Jimbaran is a must for every holiday in Bali dozens of seafood warung (cafés) line this west-facing beach, perfect for a sunset dinner. Fine dining options are available at most of the big resort hotels in this area; notably PJ's, the charming beachside restaurant at the Four Seasons in Jimbaran, serving Mediterranean-styled cuisine. And Balique on Jalan Uluwatu in Jimbaran is a delightful vintage restaurant serving great food and cool cocktails.
- Nusa Dua's Bali Collection mall has a host of local boutiques and a department store. Heading towards Kuta (about 40 minutes) brings you to Galleria shopping mall while nearby Tuban has Discovery Mall and streets lined with local shops. Seminyak boutiques are about an hour away.

Additional Notes

One or two families will find Villa Hamsa a good choice with its 14-metre pool and gym, while Villa Soham's 22-metre pool, gym sauna and steam room, and poolside entertainment bale will keep older kids well occupied. Booked together, the villas are perfect for multiple families choosing to vacation together. Those with younger kids will be relieved to leave their paraphernalia at home as the villa has a cot, high chair and children?s cutlery, and can organize the hire of other items (such as pool safety fence) on request (click here to see list of available hire items). Members of staff love having children around, and we can arrange for full-time or part-time babysitting too (extra charge applies).
There's a kids' menu featuring favourite foods, and the chef can prepare other dishes on request or adapt adult meals to suit young tastebuds. While parents are welcome to prepare meals for fussy eaters in the well-equipped kitchen, you can also choose to leave this in the capable hands of the kitchen staff.
Sohamsa's clifftop location gives a clue to some of the family activities on offer. Just a few kilometres drive away is Pandawa Beach with its stretch of white sand and shallow protected waters where you can swim safely, build sandcastles or hire a kayak. Close by is paintballing and for older kids parasailing, and within half an hour are the attractions of Nusa Dua and Jumbaran and several world-renowned surf breaks.
Dining
Nothing says "luxury holiday" more than being able to leave behind the daily grind of preparing family meals, and instead embracing the pleasure of having your own in-villa chef. With many years' experience working in noted Seminyak restaurants, Sohamsa's accomplished chef will enrich your villa experience immeasurably. Indonesian and Thai cuisine is his forte and he's adept at international dishes too.
All you have to do is leaf through the suggestion menu or make off-menu requests with him or the villa manager in the morning, perhaps after enjoying an excellent American continental or Indonesian breakfast. The next thing you know, you're sitting around the dining table enjoying a leisurely lunch, candlelit dinner or sunset barbecue without having had to lift a finger.
The chef will happily coordinate the purchase of fresh menu ingredients as well as any special requests, including alcoholic beverages. Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price plus 20%++ handling fee.
Spa & Gym
GymThe designated gym with free weights and weight bench is located at Villa Soham, and is shared with Villa Hamsa.
Spa
There's no need to leave the privacy of your own villa to enjoy some of the spa experiences for which Bali is famed, as we can arrange for well trained therapists from a reputable local spa to give you massage and other treatments within the villa at any time of the day by prior arrangement with the villa manager (extra charges will apply). Both villas have designated massage rooms, but you may also prefer to choose another place such as your bedroom, or the Hamsa master suite deck, or the Soham poolside pavilion. Here are samples of what's on offer:
Balinese massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.
Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.
Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.
Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.
Wedding
Sohamsa fuses intimacy and grandeur to create exclusive family weddings for up to 18 guests staying in luxury on site. The estate can also host larger wedding parties ' for up to 60 guests for cocktails and as many as 40 for seated dinners.
We are happy to recommend expert event organisers, florists, decorators and caterers so the wedding party can kick off their heels and concentrate on enjoying the celebrations. For information on hosting a wedding at Sohamsa Ocean Estate
