Overview

Villa Surya Damai is a sublime introduction to Bali villa living that will embrace you in its charm and make you never want to leave. Built as a family home this delightful five-bedroom property is uniquely infused with touches of colonial elegance, high-quality interiors and furnishings and all the modern creature comforts required for the perfect tropical villa holiday. Here, classic good taste is mixed with understated simplicity and our ever-happy team of staff are further evidence that this is indeed a relaxed 'home away from home,? welcoming you with a warmth and informal hospitality that will melt away your stresses and tensions.

Set amongst 2,750sqm of mature, riverside gardens overflowing with tropical flora and water features, we designed the villa as a series of charming thatched buildings in the style of a traditional Balinese family compound home. At Villa Surya Damai you will find spacious bedroom pavilions with comfortably furnished private terraces and pretty ensuite garden bathrooms, encircling a welcoming, open-sided living pavilion that faces the centrepiece 18-metre pool. Sun loungers, outdoor and indoor dining areas and an additional lounge/TV room on a wide upstairs veranda, provide more than enough options for both private and social moments. Recreational facilities include three TVs and DVD players, iPod docks and a tennis court.

Beyond the enchanting gardens and across a small river lie terraces of verdant rice fields and a grassy pasture complete with grazing cows. It?s a quiet spot where days blissfully blur together. But if you do feel the urge to venture out, the villa is just a three-kilometre drive (or a 20-minute walk) from the beach, as well as lots of world-class restaurants and stylish bars in nearby Petitenget and Seminyak.

Accommodation

Villa Surya Damai comprises several alang alang thatch-roofed pavilions generously spread throughout an immaculately landscaped riverside garden featuring an 18-metre swimming pool. At the centre of the compound, facing the pool, is an informal, open-sided living pavilion. Stepping-stone pathways set in lush green lawns lead to a master suite, principal guest suite and a double-storey pavilion, containing three bedrooms and a second, veranda-style, living area. Another pavilion, overlooking the swimming pool, houses the formal dining room and adjoining kitchen. A hard-surface tennis court sits in the far corner of the grounds.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

Master suite

Courtesy of their flexible, family-friendly configurations, Villa Surya Damai's five spacious air-conditioned bedrooms can sleep up to 14 guests.  All rooms are simply but very tastefully presented with top-quality teakwood furniture. For lovers of open-air living, glass sliding doors and ceiling fans allow natural breezes to flow through.

The villa's outrageously comfortable beds boast king-coil mattresses, stacks of pillows and cushions and the finest quality bed linens. Rooms are individually colour co-ordinated and feature attractive rugs, floor cushions and thick curtains.  With the exception of the second storey bedroom, ensuite bathrooms are open-air Balinese style, with terrazzo stone floors and delightful tropical gardens walled for privacy.

Master suite

The master suite is entered via a veranda and features wood floors, ceiling fan, a king-size four-poster bed and, at either end of the room, large carved wall decorations. Doors lead to a gorgeous open-air garden bathroom with twin washbasins and massive ceramic bathtub.

Glass sliding doors from the bedroom lead into an air-conditioned sitting room featuring satellite TV, DVD player and sound system and furnished with a sofa and small library. This, in turn, leads to a second veranda, which has a huge cushioned daybed ? perfect for surveying the lawns and pool or for enjoying a relaxing massage.

Principal guest suite

Set towards the back of the compound, looking out over the delightful gardens, stands the principal guest suite. It is accessed from a cosy veranda furnished with a large daybed and rattan seating. The king-size four-poster bed in this room features an antique Javanese carved wood frame, with exquisite hand-painted headboard, while the garden bathroom is fitted with a sunken bathtub and open-air rain shower.

Guest bedrooms three and four

Side by side on the ground floor of the villa's only double-storey pavilion are two twin-bedded guest rooms, which make ideal children's quarters for family groups. Accessed via glass sliding doors, both share similar features of sweet, colour-coordinated furnishings, low ceilings and terrazzo stone floors. These rooms are more modern and functional in style, furnished with desks and decorated with tasteful modern art. Under the twin beds are neat trundle beds, making these rooms practical for up to four children in each. Doors from both rooms lead to open-air garden bathrooms: smaller in size than those of the principle suites, but still featuring sunken bathtubs which blend seamlessly with the stone floors, plus outdoor tropical rain showers.

Guest bedroom five

An open stairway to the right of bedrooms three and four leads up to a breezy balcony and the fifth bedroom. Overlooking the gardens and with views out to the fields and rice terraces beyond, this second-storey bedroom is more traditionally Asian in style. With its lofty ceiling, bedroom five is furnished with a romantic queen-size four-poster bed plus an antique wood wardrobe and desk. A set of aged timber doors leads to the villa's only indoor bathroom, with low ceiling, walk-in glass shower cubicle and, similar to the bedroom, cool terrazzo stone floors.

Living & Dining Areas

Living pavilion

Heart and hub ? literally ? of the property, the open-sided living pavilion looks out over the pool, the gardens and the rice fields beyond.  Two comfy sofas and a deep daybed with white cushions frame a large antique coffee table making a sociable space which is attractively and subtly lit at night, while a satellite TV, camouflaged in a wooden cabinet along with DVD player and Bose sound system offer audio-visual distraction.  In tropical yet homely style, this room features terrazzo stone floors and soaring alang-alang ceiling, and is kept cool with natural breezes and ceiling fan.  Understated décor includes candles, fresh orchids and traditional carved artefacts.

Dining and kitchen

In contrast to the living pavilion, the dining room is encased in glass folding doors which, when closed, project a more formal atmosphere. The room is dominated by a table crafted from a single block of aged teak wood, surrounded by 12 tall-backed cream upholstered chairs.  A ceiling fan keeps the room cool and a lengthy lily pond runs alongside, featuring a water fountain and playful fish.  A covered stone pathway links the dining room to a fully equipped kitchen that is amply efficient yet homely in style.

Next to the pool and shaded by large green parasols, a slatted teak table and eight chairs form a sociable outdoor dining area ? marvellous for sunny breakfasts, pool-side lunches or dining under the stars.

TV lounge

Adjoining bedroom five, upstairs in the two-storey pavilion, a wide veranda provides an alternative living area. Sliding doors on three sides allow guests the choice of air-conditioning or a breezy fan-cooled space overlooking the entire property. Open on three sides and with high ceilings, this breezy fan-cooled space overlooks the entire property.  Entertainment is provided with a satellite TV, DVD player and sound system hidden in a large wooden cabinet. Comfortable seating comes in the form of a squashy L-shaped sofa and some large floor cushions.

Gardens and pool

Villa Surya Damai's gardens consist of gorgeously spongy lawns, edged with tropical foliage and trees, criss-crossed with stone-paved pathways and decorated with intricately carved stone wall panels. The striking 18 x 7-metre infinity-edge pool is bordered on one side by a simple grass and stone deck where cushioned sun loungers beckon.  Lawns slope down from the far side of the pool to 60m of river frontage, edged with exotic palm fronds and coconut trees; the low wall encircling the gardens allows maximum views of the rice fields beyond.

Dusk is a particularly lovely time in the garden at Surya Damai. Take a dip in the pool and appreciate the peaceful rice-field views, as the fading sunlight stretches across the water, or wander the many hidden corners of the garden, which is magically illuminated at night with pretty Balinese lanterns and fire beacons.

Location

Villa Surya Damai is located at the edge of the village of Umalas, one of a group of small rural communities that constitute the Kerobokan district, just north of bustling Seminyak. Umalas is home to a growing number of foreign-owned residences and traditional dwellings.

The villa lies off a narrow lane that runs across a small bridge and dissects the rice fields. To the side of the villa, immediately outside the front wooden entrance doors, is a field of grazing cows. A pleasant 20-minute or so walk through farming communities and rice fields brings you to the nearest beach, Batubelig. Great for surfing, this black sand beach, like many along this south-west coastline, has strong currents, so is not advisable for novice swimmers. For surf-patrolled waters and more developed beachside amenities, head south to Legian Beach, seven kilometres away

Activities

The villa manager at Villa Sunya Damai will typically have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here's a taste of some of the activities on offer within reach of the villa.Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali's best surfing beaches, all are within easy access and Pererenan is right on your doorstep. Among these naturally beautiful beaches, Echo Beach is perhaps the most famed surfers haunt, but all are in prime position for Bali's legendary sunsets.

  • Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali's prestigious Canggu Club (a 5-10 minute short cut through the rice fields or 5.5km by car) with its state-of-the-art gym and tennis and squash courts. After work-outs, reward yourself with gourmet goodies at the nearby Deli.
  • A string of beautiful beaches renowned for their surf, are all within relatively easy access along this south-west coastline.  Nearest is Batubelig Beach (3km or a 20-minute walk), but for the area's premier surf, head to legendary surfer's haunt, Echo Beach (8km), which also provides handy post-surf sunset drinking.  Whichever beach you choose, all are in prime position for fabulous sunsets.
  • Alternatively, if you want to learn to surf, head down to Legian Beach (7km) and its Double Six area, home of reputable Rip Curl School of Surf. With the surf school's long experience and Legian's manageable waves and sandy-bottomed seas, this is a great spot for novice surfers, plus excellent brunches along the beachfront.
  • The Bali Equestrian Centre (5.5km) offers small group horse-riding tours through local rice fields, along Batubelig Beach and picturesque villages, as well as children's pony rides.
  • Built in traditional Indonesian-style, with amazing antique wood dwellings, eco-friendly Desa Seni Village Resort (a 10-minute shortcut through the rice fields or 6km by car) hosts excellent yoga and spiritual workshops in open-air pavilions. This acclaimed resort also boasts a health-giving, organic restaurant in rustic surrounds.
  • Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot (14km) one of Bali's biggest tourist magnets.  Perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is best savoured at sunset; make sure you receive a blessing from the Hindu priests at low tide.
  • Alternatively, view Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Club. Bordered by the Indian Ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, it is no wonder that this championship-standard course designed by golf legend, Greg Norman is frequently voted Asia's number one.
  • Fashionistas, trendies and shopaholics should hotfoot it down to Bali's hippest suburb, Seminyak, a 6km drive south. Here, you can indulge for hours in the globally inspired gourmet restaurants, stylish designer boutiques and chic bars ? including the much hyped Ku Dé Ta on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Drive westwards to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities ? treasures that Bali is famed for.
  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa for a couple of hours, up towards the mountain town of Bedugal.  From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu ? one of Bali's most important temples.

Services included

Exclusive use of the villa and all its facilities, including the services of a villa manager, chef, villa attendants, and a car and driver for up to eight hours a day.

Additional Notes

Families
The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus - and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Villa Surya Damai is a great villa for families, however toddlers will need to be carefully supervised around the fish ponds and water features. Younger kids will love exploring the fairy-tale garden and big kids will enjoy having their own tennis court and taking over the upstairs games room/TV lounge. The two twin-bedded rooms are great for kids to bunk down together too, each with two extra pull-out beds.

The team of friendly staff at Villa Surya Damai will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you - just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Banana pancakes by the pool for breakfast? Toasted sandwiches in the TV lounge for lunch? No problem. The chef can customise all meals to suit children's taste buds.

And don't worry about packing all that cumbersome kids' equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need; anything we don't have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, high chair books, games and kids DVDs) we can hire on your behalf

Dining
The menu

The excellent chef is highly capable of preparing a wide variety of Asian and Western dishes, from Vichyssoise soup and beef Bourguignon to local delicacies such as fish curry; not to mention teatime treats and whole rock lobster barbecues.  He can also easily accommodate children's choices and special dietary needs.  Extensive suggestion menus are provided, but Nengeh is happy to discuss special requests.

The system

To give the cooks sufficient advance warning, it helps to select meal options 24 hours in advance (however staff are always willing to accommodate requirements when able).  While the kitchen staff are excellent, they do not have the capacity of a hotel or restaurant kitchen; thus it is very much appreciated if guests minimise the number of dishes ordered at each meal.

Food and beverage charges

Groceries and beverages are charged at cost price: Staff will require guests to provide a cash float for groceries, they will then purchase the goods and present receipts when they tally up final costs.

Spa
Feel like a body scrub or massage? Just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of your own villa by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply). Here's a sample of what's on the menu:

Massage
Release built up tension with a traditional Balinese massage by the pool or in the relaxation bale. Using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and aromatherapy oils to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and energy around your body, you will feel totally relaxed in no time.

Foot reflexology
Foot reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet that correspond to every part of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes tension is relieved and circulation improved leaving you feeling balanced.

Body scrub
A full body scrub will exfoliate and hydrate your skin leaving it soft and smooth. A rejuvenating scrub combines an abrasive material such as salt, coffee, rice bran or pecan hulls with essential oils to remove any impurities and make your skin glow.

Manicure/pedicure
Our hands and feet work hard for us every day but rarely get the attention they deserve. Treat them to a manicure or pedicure, which usually comes with the added bonus of a quick hand or foot massage.

Weeding
Surya Damai, or 'Peaceful Sun' as it translates, is a name perfectly chosen for this enchanting Bali villa. Sunlight dapples through mature palms and flame trees lining 60m of river frontage with emerald rice terraces beyond in the tranquil village of Umalas. Gentle breezes and the soft tinkling of water create an overwhelming sense of calm and well-being. The villa is the ideal venue to celebrate romantic weddings with your close friends and family.
