Doi Tung Royal Villa Mae Fah Luang Garden
This beautiful royal residence, built in 1990 to mark the 90th birthday of Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother of Thailand, is a two-storey building designed in northern Thai and Swiss chalet style. Since the death of the Princess Mother in 1995, Doi Tung Royal Villa has been open to visitors to enjoy its beautiful gardens and clear mountain air.
Mae Fah Luang Garden, next to the Royal Villa, is located on land that was originally the Akha village of Pa Kluay. The village used to be an important route for opium caravans and those involved in heroin-related trafficking and weapons. Initiated in 1988, the Doi Tung Development Project has seen the transformation of the area into breathtaking parkland. Over 70 species of cool-climate ornamental and flowering plants are planted amongst native plants and perennials. The garden blooms year-round, forming a splendid hillside tapestry that changes with the seasons. A bronze statue depicting a group of children supporting each other in a human pyramid formation forms the centerpiece of the landscaped gardens, paying tribute to the tireless efforts of Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother of Thailand, to improve the lives of her people.
