Overview

Domus Civita is a stunning luxury villa in the enchanting hamlet of Civita di Bagnoregio.
Situated amid the volcanic hills of Lazio, just south of the border with Umbria, this small but majestic commune was founded by Etruscans and was the medieval home of Saint Bonaventure.

In modern times, it has been reinvented as a unique destination for sophisticated travelers exploring the Italian countryside north of Rome.
Domus Civita reflects that rich heritage, combining contemporary features and décor with gorgeous living spaces built into its ancient stone foundations.

Accommodation

Perched on a hillside with privileged views, the villa features a private garden overlooking the Lazian landscape. The garden includes a beautiful living and dining area for eight, ideal for savoring aperitivi or a delicious alfresco meal in the fragrant air.

Multiple doorways lead into the villa's stone foundations, which house the fully equipped kitchen, ample wine cellar, dreamy lounge, and stunning spa area with glowing hot tub and swimming pool.
Beautifully illuminated, these spaces have the feel of an enchanted Roman grotto.

On the ground floor where the old bottega of the house used to be, a commercial space that was open to the public.
The 2 rooms form one large suite with a king size bed & a built in sofa doubling as a twin bed + a study area for reading and relaxing with an extra twin bed and a private bathroom with shower.
The exposed tufa rock of some of the wall and the presence of the many arched doors gives this room a unique cozy feel.

Upstairs, the space and ambiance are more modern, with understated yet exquisite décor that evokes both rustic Italian charm and contemporary urban elegance. An open-plan living and dining area includes a cozy lounge and lovely table for six.

Located at the second floor 2 beedrooms , one with expansive views of the valley surrounding Civita, this room has an extra wide queen size bed, exposed ceiling beams, en suite bath with shower, ceiling fan, plenty of storage.

The views of the valley outside the window in the morning are delightful and the modern interior touches combined with the carefully restored old doors and ceilings create a vibrant and beautiful environment.

The second bedreoom with intimate views of the town of Civita, has an extra wide queen size bed, exposed ceiling beams, en suite bath with shower, ceiling fan and plenty of storage.

The room is bright and breezy creating an atmosphere of serenity. The golden color of the town outside the windows glows beautifully throughout the day and gives the room a romantic and intimate feel.

From the formal Italian garden you can access 2 stone caves that have been converted into an amazing and unique pool with hot tub as well as a garden kitchen. Below these an underground art gallery has been created in a medieval wine storage grotto.

These spaces have all been carved into the tufa rock of the cliff centuries ago and we reinvented their use to provide unique amenities that enhance the magical quality of the house.

Domus Civita enjoys an outstanding location for exploring the rich history and fertile landscapes of Lazio and Umbria.
Embark by car through the countryside of Viterbio toward the town Orvieto in the north or Lago di Bolsena to the west.

Wine lovers will want to taste the Trebbiano and Malvasia di Candia wines of Lazio, as well as the Sangiovese and Sagrantino wines of Umbria. Rome to the south and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west are both within easy reach.

Location

Civita di Bagnoregio is a unique destination: a pristine Medieval village on a promontory set in a vaste valley carved into volcanic rock by two rivers.
Its only connection to the modern world is a footbridge by which you will travel the last half mile of your voyage into another world, virtually untouched by modern life.

This town founded by the Etruscans, conquered by the Romans, shaped by the architecture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance is located in central Italy in the Lazio region at the border with Umbria.

It survives and thrives in the heart of the Alta Tuscia, the beautiful and historically rich land of the Etruscans, and offers a gateway not only to the past but to many beautiful villages and towns in southern Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio.

We have a great network of professional people including caterers, musicians, photographers, hair dressers, who will make your celebration memorable.

The wine cellar and caves
An old Roman water cistern, still plastered in its original hydraulic plaster, has been transformed into a truly unique wine cellar of highly selected local wines for our guests' delight.

It is accessed through a medieval set of caves and tunnels dug fully into the rock which also connect the house to the garden.
It is a magical experience to walk through and being able to enjoy these unusual underground spaces.

Domus Civita has an exclusive wine cellar of more than 300 bottles in a 2000-year-old Roman water cistern for our guests to purchase and enjoy.

The wines are mostly a selection of local and unique producers in a large range of prices and varieties.
Feel free to browse our cellar and drink as you like and we will charge you according to menu's prices provided. If you want to know more about these delightful wines and their characteristics and indulge in the perfect cheese pairings, we will invite an expert chef to organize a tasting in the comfort of Domus Civita!

Restaurants
Civita
Forno di Agnese
One of our favorite places in town and just around the corner from Domus Civita, It is run by lovely owner Manuela who is always charming and happy to assist and accomodate anybody. The food is authentic and delicious home cooking of traditional recipes sometimes with a little twist.  Great local wines, Antipasti and a delicious lemon tiramisu! Located just off the main piazza, across from the church.

La Cantina
This is quintessential Civita as it has been for decades. It is a restaurant without a kitchen! Everything they serve is either grilled on the fireplace (meat, sausages, vegetables), cooked under the ash (potatoes, to die for), fresh cut with a knife (prosciutto, salame, bread), or preserved and marinated in the owner Antonio's olive oil (eggplants, zucchini, peppers, etc.)

Service is rustic with plastic plates and paper napkins but the flavors are authentic, delicious and the ambiance just perfect! Located next to the church.

Snack Bars
La Piazzetta and Da Peppone are the only two snack bars in town and both delightful especially in a summer afternoon if you want to mingle with the locals while sipping a bitter, a glass of wine or an espresso, or in the morning if you want to have an Italian breakfast with cappuccino and a cornetto.

Mercatello
At the base of the foot bridge is a good restaurant with a great view of Civita from its terrace. The cuisine is very local and always genuine and includes fresh fish from nearby Tirrenian sea as well as lake Bolsena. The service is friendly and attentive.
Across from the restaurant is one of the best gelato icecream bars in the area. Perfect on any time of day but especially on a hot summer afternoon! Try the mint and the chocolate flavors!

Bagnoregio
Il Bocconcino
Is a tiny little restaurant just across the stone gate of the city. It serves a mixture of local and Sardinian cuisine (the owner is from the island of Sardinia) in a cozy atmosphere. The food is very well prepared and the flavors very good. We enjoyed the selections of wines, all from local producers.

Bolsena
La Pineta
This restaurant has a lovely location on the Bolsena lake shore, just a 15 minutes drive from Civita and a few steps from the center of Bolsena old town and castle. It specializes in fish delicacies including seafood and lake fish and serves mostly fixed sampling menus that are quite good!

Orvieto
Vinosus
This restaurant is considered one of the best in the area and is especially known for their exquisite wine selections. The owner Luca will guide you personally through the wine list and the chef Rita will delight you with typical Umbrian recipes with an updated touch.

Charlie
This is one of the most popular spots in town for pizza and personally we think they make some of the best pizza in central Italy! The restaurant/ pizzeria has a beer garden style courtyard for outdoor dining in the summer and a spacious interior during the rest of the year.

Osteria del Grillo
This restaurant is not in the center of town but just above the train station in Orvieto Scalo. While the location is not ideal if you are touring the old town, the food is outstanding. They do not serve any pasta but only wonderfully fresh and beautifully prepared appetizers and delicious local organic meats.
