Overview

Striking original XIII and IIIXX century architectural features, contemporary amenities and style. Bel Orizzonte is an elegant blend of tradition and modern luxury. Each room has been individually renovated, wooden beams framing a beautifully curated collection of modern furnishings and accessories. A historic customs post, Bel Orizzonte sits atop a ridge on the Umbrian-Tuscan-Lazio border, a wide rural panorama spreading out below the windows and terraces.

Expansive views towards Orvieto and Tuscany form a magnificent backdrop to daily dips in the heated pool, or alfresco dinners accompanied by the quiet natural music of the countryside. Nothing disturbs the Italian idyll unless you want it to.

Accommodation

Inside the main house and guest house, a total of eight en suite bedrooms have been sensitively restored using local materials. Wooden and tiled floors, ancient beams and delicate paint and plaster work sit alongside beautifully integrated modern technology and contemporary luxury fittings. Separate, yet connected by a pretty courtyard, the two houses offer as much privacy or community as desired.

The heated infinity pool has panoramic views and both sunny and pergola-shaded areas to lounge, a gazebo stretches over a dining area with pizza oven and barbecue and a bocce court invites friendly competition. Inside, challenge fellow guests in the billiards room or yourself in the gym, and enjoy a sauna, bar, home theater and Wi-Fi access.

Activities

Places to visit in Umbria
Bel Orizzonte has been crafted as a haven of relaxation and tradition, a slower pace where guests can unwind and simply enjoy time together in the beautiful Umbrian countryside. However, history, culture and gastronomy lie on the doorstep; proximity to the A1 autostrada puts Bel Orizzonte at the heart of Italy, perfectly located for visiting some of the country's most beautiful towns and countryside. Rome, Florence and Siena are all a short drive or train ride away, while the impressive Monte Rufeno National Park lines one edge of the estate.

Rome
Home to the Vatican City, the Roman Forum, the Coliseum and the Spanish Steps, Rome is an icon of European and Italian history and culture. Awesome architecture lines wide streets, while contemporary art and culture come to the fore in galleries and restaurants throughout the capital. Just two hours drive on the Autostrada, or easily accessible by regular trains from the small town of Fabro (10 minutes from Bel Orizzonte), the it's an easy cosmopolitan day trip.

Florence
The riverside city of Florence is the centre of Renaissance Italy; historical home of artists, architects and designers. Its museums and galleries are renowned the world over, a calling card for some of the most famous names in art and innovation. The sights of the Uffizi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens are just an hour and a half from Bel Orizzonte, and on the train line from nearby Fabro.

Siena
A beautiful homage to Italian Gothic architecture, Siena's city centre is a living museum of art and culture, an hour and 20 minutes from Bel Orizzonte. The Piazza del Campo acts as the social heart of the city, home to theatre, aperitif gatherings and, of course, the famous Palio horse race.

Lago di Bolsena
Italy's largest lake sits in the crater of an extinct volcano 30 minutes from Bel Orizzonte, the crystal clear waters beckoning swimmers and pleasure boaters alike. Picturesque lakeside towns are strung out along the shore like colourful beads, the jewels in Lazio's lakeside crown. Boat excursions run from Bolsena to the islands, one of which houses the summer residence of the Pope. The water is fresh enough to drink , a fact attested to by the presence of the delicious local Coregone fish, a staple on the menu of many of the local restaurants.

Orvieto
Built on a huge slab of volcanic rock, Orvieto dominates the horizon, drawing visitors with its picturesque setting and beautiful cathedral frescos. Wander the historic streets of the town, or explore the tunnels and caves underneath the rock, before sampling the local wines. Orvieto is the centre of the Umbrian wine industry. Just a 20 minute drive from the estate.

Perugia
Perugia's winding streets are a picture of traditional Umbrian life, home to small shops and cafes, and a warm local welcome. However, the real draw is the Duomo (Cathedral of San Lorenzo) where the Virgin Mary is said to have married. The ring, stolen by Perugians from the nearby town of Chiusi in 1448, is kept in a vault protected by 15 locks, and only shown to the public annually on July 30th.

Citta della Pieve
Home of the Renaissance painter, Perugino, Città della Pieve is a colourful homage to Umbrian art and architecture. Striking for its intense terracotta colour, the city is most famous for its cathedral, which showcases works by Perugino, and its Palio of the terzieri, a striking renaissance costume parade. Dominating the skyline is the fortress with its five square towers, while in the town centre the Piazza del Plebiscito is worth seeing for the historical and architectonic fulcrum in the cathedral.

Civita di Bagnoregio
Founded by Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago, Civita di Bagnoregio is notable for its striking position on top of a plateau of friable volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber river valley. The edges of the plateau are under constant threat of erosion, lending the town a romantic ever-present sense of danger as buildings gently crumble while the underlying support falls away. Tiny and traditional, the population fluctuates between about 12 people during winter and up to 100 during the summer months.

San Casciano dei Bagni
It was the Eutruscans who first discovered the picturesque thermal pools at San Casciano dei Bagni, but the Romans really developed the area into the pretty spa town it is today. There are 42 springs dotted across the territory, with the Fonteverde Spa only a few meters from the historic town centre. The medieval architecture makes the town also worth a visit, with a maze of alleys wrapping themselves up around the hill, towards the Collegiate and the Town Hall.

Things to do in Umbria
Vineyards
Umbria's gastronomic identity is centred around the local wines. The area is home to several small, family-run vineyards scattered across the Umbrian hills. Take a wine tour and visit the production facilities of labels such as Ravazzi, VitaLunga, Cirulli and Castello della Sala (Antinori).

Walking
Easy white roads wind throughout the estate and into the countryside beyond. The Umbrian hills are not for the faint-hearted, but they reward the effort with beautiful views over the surrounding landscape.

Horseriding
Il Felcino, an agriturismo two kilometres from Bel Orizzonte, offers riding tours and holidays with their team of friendly and reliable horses. With mounts for all abilities, it's a charming way to explore the area.

Spa
Feel the stress and strain of real life drift away with a soak in the natural springs at FonteVerde, in San Casiano di Bagni, 30 minute's drive from the estate. The whole family can indulge - there's even a special thermal pool for dogs.

Explore caves under Orvieto
The rocks under Orvieto have been home to a network of tunnels and caves for thousands of years. An hour-long tour takes visitors through the most impressive and easily accessible, including a 40-metre well, a dovecote for edible pigeons and a 20th century bomb shelter.

The Umbria Jazz Festival
Music fills the air at the biannual Umbrian Jazz Festivals. Both renowned and young local musicians and international artists perform amid cobbled piazzas and ancient churches twice a year - in Perugia in summer and Orvieto in winter.

The food and wine of Umbria
Food and wine are central to Umbrian hospitality; long lunches with family and friends stretching into the evenings as more and more wine, cheeses and meats come out of the kitchen. Simple yet delicous proiduce is the mark of a good Umbrian meal, and the region is famous for three things in particular - truffles, pecorino cheese and Orvieto Classico  wine, as some of the best olive oil in Italy.

Vineyards
As well as the vines at Bel Orizzonte, the surrounding areas is dotted with small, family-run vineyards which welcome visitors for a stroll amid the vines or a tasting in the production centres:

Eating & Drinking

Described as Italy's best-kept secret, Umbria is a rural Italian idyll, a region of exceptional food and wine production, rolling green hills and traditional villages. Here, days slow down; a life of good food and quality time with friends and family that has hardly changed in 500 years.

It was this authenticity and character that inspired the owners to invest in Bel Orizzonte. A run-down former farming estate infused with Umbrian charm and tradition, over the years, it has regained its place in the region as a working organic farm.

The estate is dedicated to preserving the historic indigenous Chianina. The white cattle that dot the fields are an ancient breed, raised in Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio for over 2000 years. Chiannia beef is famed for its quality and nutritional value and is used to make the famous bistecca alle fiorentina premium steaks. Torre Bisenzio has been instrumental in increasing the population of the Chiannia cattle in the area, and now boasts a 125-strong herd roaming the farm.

With 650 olive trees, a hectare of vines and 450 hectares of land, the estate also produces organic vegetables, red and white wines, a fragrant, high quality olive oil and a deep red saffron.

Guests can explore the heart of Italy without leaving the estate, spending hours wandering the olive groves and vineyards or visiting the farm and their wine production. Easy white tracks crisscross through the fields; a gentle walk through Umbria's rural heritage.
