How to get to Formentera
Formentera is located a short ferry trip away, just off the coast of Ibiza.Being a small island, Formentera does not have an airport, making it accessible only by boat from Ibiza or Ferries from Denia to Formentera.
Surprisingly there is a good selection of boat services to and from Formentera, with many leaving on an hourly basis in summer. Most boats leave from the main port in Ibiza and take around half an hour to reach the port of La Savina in Formentera.
Cala Saona beach is a 10 minute drive away or a 5 minute cycle ride to the seas edge and a lovely walk along the cliff edges to the beach. The closest shop is at bar es cap 10 minutes drive away and also restaurants. The nearest town is San Francesc, which is not far up the road for all amenities. The lighthouse of Cap barbaria is 3 km away.
Activities
Ever dreamt of a place where all your troubles melt away, the water is an impossible shade of turquoise and relaxation is a way of life?
Welcome to Formentera, this little known jewel of the Balearics is the perfect place to unwind and find yourself again, and with fantastic views, great food and dazzling white sandy beaches, you'll never want to leave.
It has no less than 12 fantastic sandy beaches to soak up the sun on. During the peak summer months it can get a little crowded, but usually you can find your own piece of beach away from other tourists. And if you're feeling peckish, you can get a snack or drink from one of the many chiringuitos (beach bars) scattered around the island.
The smallest and least developed of all the Balearic islands Formentera has an area of just 83 square kilometers, and a coastline of 69km making it perfect for exploring by kayak or boat. This idyllic island also has a number of excellent short walks, some with breathtaking views across to Ibiza (try the old roman path up La Mola), and has many pleasant cycling trails on which to explore the island. Bicycles, mopeds and cars can be rented from numerous places scattered around, including the port of La Savina.
Formentera's capital is the pretty whitewashed village of Sant Francesc Xavier. With its various boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants, it is the perfect place for a spot of shopping, lounging over lunch or just sitting in one of the lovely plazas and watching the world go by.
Whether its shopping, eating, drinking, exploring or just sunbathing you're after, Formentera has a little bit of it all, and if your idea of heaven includes all of these plus crystal clear turquoise waters, then consider it paradise found.
Playas
Playa IlletesThis is arguably one of the most popular Formentera beaches, and for good reason. It has picture postcard views across its incredibly clear turquoise waters, and a long stretch of fine white sand that many say is reminiscent of the caribbean.
Cavall d'en Borrà s
If you're into boat spotting then this is the beach to be at. You can chill on the white sand while watching the boats sail to and from the pretty harbour of La Savina.
Sa Roqueta
Sa Roqueta is a string of lovely white sandy beaches, with rocky outcrops in between, creating a more intimate setting on the beach.
Playa Es Pujols
This is one of the more popular Formentera beaches as it is right next to the vibrant town of Es Pujols which hosts many apartments, shops, bars & restaurants.
Playa Llevante
On the opposite side to Illetes is Llevant. It has the same white sand and turquoise water, is usually less populated than Illetes and as far as Formentera beaches go, its one of the better ones, with a long stretch of the powdery white stuff.
Cala Saona
Cala Saona is a beautiful sandy bay on the western side of Formentera. It is one of the most sheltered Formentera beaches, with rocky headlands on both sides that protect it from the wind.
Playa Es Calo
Es Calo is home to a small perfectly formed harbour surrounded by boat houses and a couple of small round beaches that are only a short stroll from the car park and restaurants.
Playa Migjorn
Playa Migjorn hosts some of the coolest hangouts on Formentera. Located just off its white sandy shores are bars such as the popular Flipper & Chiller, the uber chilled Geko Beach Club, and the much frequented restaurante Real Playa.
Formentera Walks
Most people come to Formentera to relax and chill on a beach but for some, exploring your surroundings and getting out close to nature is what a holiday is all about. And for those people, Formentera does not disappoint. Having 69km of coastline means this island has many walks that are close to or indeed right beside the ocean, affording stunning views at every step.
