Overview
Sanctuarisation Kusini offers a Serengeti safari like no other. This is
the only permanent camp in this unspoilt and remote part of the
Serengeti and every year wildebeest congregate on the camp's "doorstep".
Perfectly set in the remote southern part of the Serengeti,
Sanctuary Kusini's location was specially selected after much research
by our guides and the local experts. It overlooks the plains where game
are a common sight all year round. Built around a spectacular rocky
outcrop and on the path of the wildebeest migration, the camp is ideal
for seeing cheetah and wildebeest that congregate on the grassy plains
in the calving season from mid-December to March.
Accommodation
Sanctuary Kusini is the only permanent tented camp in the southern Serengeti.
Perfectly
sited in a cluster of kopjes, Sanctuary Kusini's twelve spacious tents
blend seamlessly into the predator-rich plains of the Serengeti.
Part
of Sanctuary Kusini's charm is its remote and private location within
the park, offering exceptional and essentially private game viewing.
Built around a spectacular rocky outcrop, or kopje, the camp's communal
areas include a dining area, lounge and library, as well as a campfire.
The views from the kopje are simply sensational - the perfect spot for
sundowners and stargazing.
The library is stocked with reference
books to read up on the day's discoveries, and of course, our
experienced guides are always on hand to fill in about local knowledge
where books cannot. Like all Sanctuary properties, Sanctuary Kusini is
designed to have minimal environmental impact, in fact the camp can be
packed up and removed without leaving a trace.
The open-plan
en-suite twelve tents at Sanctuary Kusini are shaded from the sun by
acacia trees and all are extremely spacious at 48 square metres. Nestled
in amongst the woodland, each tent has carefully thought-out views of
the bush making it the perfect hideaway for casual game viewing. Each
tent has its own personal attendant to look after guests during their
stay and feature mosquito netting, hairdryers and in-room safe.
A
large private wooden veranda with comfortable furnishings extends in
front of each tent, with many having views of the plains below where
zebra, buffalo and lion are a common sight year-round, the ideal spot to
relax for a sundowner after a hot restorative shower.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
The
camp consists of only 12 luxury tents, spaced out to provide absolute
privacy and exceptional views. Shaded by acacia tree, these eco-friendly
tented suites have been designed to minimise the impact on the natural
surroundings. Each elegantly-appointed tent offers the services of a
private butler as well as a private wooden veranda with comfortable
furniture where you can relax between game-viewing activities.
Living & Dining Areas
Owing
to the camp's intimate nature, meals are served either beneath the
African stars or by candle light in the romantic dining tent. For
something more memorable and romantic, choose to dine on a nearby rocky
outcrop or at a selected location in the bush.

Activities
Game drives
Sanctuary
Kusini is one of the great places in the world to see large predators -
lion, cheetah and even the elusive leopard can be seen lying in the
kopjes nearby camp. Between January and March the great migration
returns and wildebeest and zebra cover the plains as they give birth to
their young. The treeless plains in this area provide the perfect
habitat for cheetah who have made his area of the park their permanent
home. Our experienced guides know every inch of the territory around the
camp and this remote corner of the vast eco-system never disappoints -
buffalo, elephant, hyena and giraffe, all can be seen close to the camp.
There are no other permanent camps round here so adventurous travellers
can be sure of unobstructed viewing from our customised safari
vehicles. Bird life is particularly good on the forest edge where
woodpeckers and brightly coloured kingfishers can often be seen.
Cosmic Safari
Most
visitors come to Africa looking for the wildlife and the beauty, yet
one of the most spectacular sights of all is hardly ever mentioned - the
African night sky, offering some of the best star gazing in the world.
In the evening, sit on a comfortable cushion up on top of the main kopje
or around the campfire and allow the camp manager to uncover the
universe. With a green laser pointer to show you the way, embark on a
walk through the stars where you can look back millions of years in time
and get lost in the beauty of the night sky. Weather conditions and
moon phases must be taken into consideration when planning your perfect
cosmic safari.
Serengeti cheetah project
A unique
activity has been developed at Sanctuary Kusini where guests can
contribute to the Serengeti Cheetah Project by monitoring the cheetah of
this vast national park. Venture out into this remote region of the
Serengeti with your expert guide in search of cheetah. Your guide will
introduce you to the cheetah's habitat and teach you how to correctly
identify and photograph the cheetah you spot and record their behaviour
and location. Your contribution to the project could uncover new
movement patterns and aid development of conservation programs. Since
Sanctuary Kusini developed the cheetah watch activity in 2009, guests
have supplied valuable information on over 60 different cheetah, many of
which had not been seen for years. In recognition, the Cheetah Project
has named one long-lost cheetah "Kusini".
